Mad Painter – Illusion

What do you get if you cross early 70’s psychedelia with glam- spattered rock and roll from the likes of Mott The Hoople and The Faces and a classic 1970’s heavy rock sound? Look it up in a dictionary and you will see a picture of band Mad Painter.

A new band from Boston, Mad Painter have their roots firmly in the melodic rock traditions of the 1970’s, which is very evident in their music and Illusion is their latest track, released on 13/11/2022.

Taking you on an auditory journey, this track crosses many genres, from psychedelic to rock to electronic and back again. The use of distorted guitars takes you back to the sounds of the late 60’s and early 70’s and the electronic synths mix it up with late 70’s progressive vibes.

The combination of male lead vocals, which are strong and obviously rock influenced, with female backing vocals is great, adding a depth to the track that is in addition to the already multi-dimensional sound the music creates.

Changing tempos throughout the track keeps the listener engaged and, again, is a shout out to the progressive rock influences the band has.

This is a really great track. and I can’t wait to hear more from them!

Tatum Quinn – Short Supply

Tatum Quinn is a Canadian singer/songwriter and Short Supply is her latest single released on 10/11/2022.

With a Brit-pop/rock vibe and a backbeat reminiscent of something put out by the likes of Joan Jett or Patti Smith, this is a great track that, I think, will appeal to a wide audience, from rock fans to pop alike.

Tatum’s voice is strong, and layered with the back up vocals, she has a great sound, which is gutsy and full of attitude. She is very versatile, ranging from pop tones to indie/rock sounds, combining everything perfectly.

The chorus has a heavier sound than the lighter verses, but it is still catchy and anthemic. There is a certain amount of distortion on the guitars which gives the track a gritty edge, taking it away from the pop genre.

Her Facebook page states she plays “raspy, rock orientated performances,” and it’s the excellent mix of pop, rock and indie that really makes this song work.

And finishing off with the line she does (go and check out the song if you want to know what it is!) shows this girl ain’t for messing with!

I really liked this track. Check it out for yourself and see if you do too!

The Goons – DCxPC Live Vol 5 – Live At The Black Cat 2001

DCxPC is a collaboration that books and releases music from live shows for multiple bands and 18th November 2022 saw Volume 5 – The Goons Live AT The Black Cat 2001.

This album was recorded in 2001 during the Goons tour with The Varukers and Molotov Cocktail but was never released until now.

Formed in Washington DC in the early 90’s, The Goons formed a seminal part of the hardcore punk scene, and this can be clearly seen from this album.

Raw and unpolished, as any punk album should be, this is frantic and full of energy from start to finish. Even as just a listener of the album, I can imagine the sweat and vigour that would have been created at this gig. The album brings across all the right vibes and energies from the show completely.

The frantic drumming and dirty, fast guitars are accompanied by classic punk vocals and the shouty backups add to the anarchic sound this band have.

Each track is short and to the point, the whole fifteen tracks of the album lasting just twenty-nine minutes, and there is always something going on that keeps the listener interested.

I listened to this album a good number of times and on each occasion couldn’t believe how quickly the album ended, never once getting bored with what I was hearing, and there are bigger punk fans out there than me!

This is a great album that any hardcore punk fan should listen to, whether they are from the original punk era or have come to the genre later, as the intensity and sheer force that comes from this band is awesome.

So, all you punk fans out there…. go and check out this album! You’ll be silly not to!

The Metal Asylum Talks To……….

Edwin (Guitar) and Tyler (Vocals) from Harvest the Lost

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Edwin: The name in short refers to the grim reaper, which is why you see a scythe in our logo. Much of our material covers melancholic topics about the human experience, based on a mixture of fictional and non-fictional themes, including death, the downfall of the human race, horror, etc.

We started the band in October 2016, which was when we recorded our first song, Wasted Life. I grew up in Northern Virginia while Tyler grew up in Central Virginia, and Australia for a time!

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Tyler: Yeah we’re the same age. We worked together but didn’t interact much. Once we both realized that we were both into metal and played music everything kind of just fell into place.

Edwin: Before the band, I had a solo instrumental project that I did as a hobby and posted stuff to soundcloud. At some point, Tyler sent me a sample of his vocals over one of my tracks and after a little bit of brainstorming, we decided to form a new band altogether.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Tyler: I grew up in a super conservative and religious household so finding music that I could relate to was difficult for me. I started skateboarding when I was 14 and my friends introduced me to Slipknot. I immediately fell in love with their sound and image and started downloading their music off of limewire. I would listen to them behind my parents back and they were my gateway-drug into the metal music world. So slipknot has a special place in my heart. Now days I’d have to say my favorite bands are Signs of the Swarm, Lorna Shore, Carnifex and  Monastaries. Will Ramos is a huge inspiration vocally and a good model of all the crazy sounds a human being can make.

Edwin: I listened to hip-hop growing up but really did so to try and fit in with the “cool kids” (Spoiler alert: It didn’t work). When I was about 14, I was introduced to System of a Down and immediately fell in love. As time went on, I went looking for something heavier, but I didn’t know how or where to find it. I had a friend in high school burn me a CD with bands like Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slipknot, and Behemoth. Tyler was actually the one that got me more into deathcore and I started listening to bands like Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, To The Grave. Behemoth is definitely a major influence for my guitar playing as they use lots of tremolo picking/palm muting and harmonic minor patterns. I also draw a bit of inspiration from After the Burial, which is a favorite of mine.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Tyler: I’ve been playing music since I was 10 years old. I started with classical piano and picked up the guitar halfway through my teenage years. Music has always been a passion of mine and I’ve always tried to incorporate it into my life in some way or another.

Edwin: I was a band geek all throughout grade school, playing the trumpet. At 14, I got a guitar for Christmas which was coincidentally when I began listening to metal and 17 year later, here I am. I don’t ever plan on stopping!

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Tyler: “Stained in Rot “ by Ov Sulpher, “King ov Deception “ by Lorna Shore, “Force fed Apathy” by Monastaries are my favorites right now.

Do you sing in the shower?

Tyler: Not really. Honestly most of my singing and screaming practice is done on my hour commute to work and back each day.

Edwin: Maybe humming some riff ideas here and there but mostly I just ponder the universe and the ever present existential dread haha

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Tyler: Release as much fucking music as possible and hopefully start to get a little more attention from the metal community.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Tyler: Yeah we’ve got several in the works!

Edwin: As a matter of fact, we have a single coming out on December 02! It’s called Devoid Ov Hope.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Tyler: Honestly the Canal Club in Richmond, VA or Baltimore Soundstage would be sick.” That’s where we always have to go to see metal shows so I guess that’s just in my head ha. Also now that I think about it, Penhurst Asylum in Pennsylvania would be pretty cool too- they sometimes have concerts there and that would be pretty badass.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Tyler: No, unless we’re talking about Slipknot I never have a favorite album-I just like various songs from albums.

Edwin: It’s always hard to choose, but definitely Rareform by After the Burial

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Tyler: I listen to a wide range of music from Classical music, pop punk, Country and Southern Rock. I’m pretty open about my musical influence and tastes so I don’t feel bad about any of them ha.

Edwin: I make it a point not to ever feel guilty about anything I listen to! That being said, I love Taylor Swift, especially her new album. But it also depends on my mood because I’ll listen to just about anything, ie rap, EDM, country…

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Tyler: Lorna Shore, Signs of the Swarm, Chelsea Grin, Brand of Sacrifice, Angelmaker, Carnifex, Monastaries, Distant and Vulvodynia.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money?

Tyler: Oh god, I’m pretty sure it was probably *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys or something back in the 90s lol.

Edwin: Mine was definitely No Strings Attached by *NSYNC.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Tyler: Thanks for supporting our music, it means so much. I always tell Edwin that if at least one fucking pre-teen listens to us behind his parents back and blares our music when he’s pissed at his mom then we’ll have accomplished enough haha.

Electric Sol – Looking For Love

Originating from the Sonoran Desert, this indie pop/dance group are rising through the music industry with their new take on music! As a 5-person band, every aspect is covered, and their music is just incredible. They created their music to encourage people onto the dance floor, and to meet new people.

As soon as I heard their latest release “Looking For Love” I thought, yes this is the one! I was so unexpectedly thrilled with this tune, and I cannot find a single fault in it.

The song is definitely one that gets you up and going, filled with good vibes and love. The beat is catchy and is the kind of song I would love to hear in a nightclub.

Edward Sweet, the usual lead vocalist of the group, does exceptionally well in this track. Although the vocals are kept to a minimum with its simplistic sound, they are extremely effective, and really keep us engrossed within the song. Additionally, we also have Lindsey Blair with her amazing backup vocals towards the end, which are just as unreal!

The lyrics are all literally about “Looking For Love,” as he feels ready to take that step in his life and this is a topic many can relate to.

Anyway, give Electric Sol’s new track a listen to, and you will definitely not regret it!

Romain Gusty – If You Don’t Mind

Sometimes it is nice to review a track that is slightly different from my usual taste, and this new track has given me the chance to do so.

Romain Gusty, a French born and raised singer-songwriter, has made his return after almost 20 years. Romain begun his musical career in the 90s with his band work, but he returned in 2020 as a solo artist! He has really started to show his talent, and his newest release “If You Don’t Mind” is fantastic!

Romain has collaborated with Marc Bentel to create this country, folk track. This tune is a joyful, eccentric one that persuades you to dance. Romain’s music is very unique with his own sound, which does not stop surprising you. Not only does this song possess elements of country and folk, but there are also features of jazz music. The inclusion of trumpets adds to this jazz-like sound.

The vocals in “If You Don’t Mind” have that country like tone, which I find quite interesting and find myself enjoying very much. The track is quite rebellious in its lyrics, as he sings about sex, drugs, and politics.

If you find yourself a fan of this kind of music, then be sure to give Romain Gutsy a listen to!

Rose Spearman – Who We Be

The Dutch/American singer-songwriter is back again with her new track, which dropped on 07/10/2022. Rose is very well known to sing about her own family issues, and things that she has experienced in her life. She has also found herself winning the European Borders Breakers Award and creating her own international music company, M.A.R.S. Label Group.

“Who We Be” is the perfect soft pop-rock hit, and I personally am so pleasantly surprised with this one! This track is undoubtedly a song of nostalgia and conflict. Spearman has previously mentioned that this song is about “being caught between white and black roots and between the USA and Europe.”

The song has great groovy sound to it, with a beat that will stay in your head all day. The band sound is an excellent choice for this, as we feel a sense of realism.

Ultimately, it is clear that Rose Spearman’s voice is exceptional, full of beautiful harmonies. Her voice is so strong, and she definitely deserves recognition for her talents!

If you are yet to hear music from Rose, “Who We Be” should unquestionably be at the top of the list.

Anton Commissaris – Straight On Down The Line

The music composer, pianist and vocalist, Anton Commissaris dropped a new hit “Straight On Down The Line” on the 21/10/2022. Anton, coming from the San Francisco Bay area, has always had a love for jazz and creating music. With vocal influences such as Paul McCartney and Frank Sinatra, his music immediately gains our interest.

This track is a jazz, swinging tune, that makes us want to tap our feet to. Anton’s use of the drums creates a joyful, exciting beat. The drums are accompanied by pianos and guitars, together creating a cheerful song. They even include a little guitar solo during the latter part of the song, which is just incredible!

Anton’s groovy vocals are another fantastic element of this song as not only do we have one vocalist, but we also have two! A female vocalist joins in with the choruses with her beautiful voice, really adding to the song’s intel.

“Straight On Down The Line” is a great jazz, and blues infused song, that you guys have got to have a listen to! Even if you find yourself not a usual fan of this genre, like me, I am certain you guys will be pleasantly surprised with the track!

Nadirah X – I Got You

Nadirah is a Jamaican originated songster, who moved herself to Los Angeles to help her musical career to grow. Nadirah, better known as Nadz, has achieved some amazing things in her position, including performing with Mick Jagger in the film ‘Alfie’ and writing two poetry books. With her career beginning over a decade ago, Nadz is still creating music with her newest hit “I Got You,” which was released on 04/10/2022.

The rap/hip-hop track “I Got You” has all the elements of a great song! It is not every day that we hear a hard rap song by a female artist, and I think that is what makes this one so refreshing. With a lot to live up to, Nadz has created an exceptional song! Her rapping is smooth, and clear, and I honestly am in love with her sound.

The backbeat in this track is super catchy, and really adds to it. This is the kind of the track that you will be listening to on repeat all day!

Nadz’s lyricism in this is quite sweet, as she raps about love between two people, and how even in this difficult, strange word, all you need is love!

Go ahead and give “I Got You” a quick listen to and I promise you will find yourself loving it!

Mary Ozaraga – Better Days

Mary Ozaraga is a singer-song writer from the Philippines. With her work starting during the global pandemic in lockdown, she begun to share her ideas and musical experiments.

“Better Days” is one of Mary’s most recent tracks that she personally wrote to help a friend who was battling with depression. The song creates an amazing atmosphere filled with love that just lifts us up.

First and foremost, Mary’s voice is amazing! When I first listened to this track, I was gobsmacked with how good she is! Her voice is extremely soothing and is perfect for this type of song.

This track is the ultimate pop-rock track, filled with positivity. The beat remains catchy and kind of just makes us want to get up and dance to it. There are elements of rock with the rough guitar that is in the background and this gives the song some rawness.

If you ever find yourself feeling down, this is undoubtedly the track to listen to! It raises your spirits, creates a sense of hope, and may even get you dancing along to the beat.

Mary has truly created a masterpiece with this one, and I am excited to hear other future music by her!
