Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?
Dan and I (Heather) are siblings and have played together in past projects. We formed Kilmore in 2013 as a new project together. We had moved to Halifax in the 90s and grew up listening to all types of music including grunge, rock, rap, country and metal but heavy music really stood out as our favourite.
Shortly after forming the band and beginning to write songs Neil Spence (bass) and Lor Sangster (drums) joined our musical journey. Neil and Lor grew up in Nova Scotia and also played in the local music scene. Later in 2019, Lor moved on to new projects and Jon MacIsaac joined the band on drums to complete our current line-up.
Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?
We all grow up in Nova Scotia and were part of the Halifax music scene. Halifax has a pretty vibrant music scene for a smaller city, and everyone tends to run into each other at one time or another. Since Dan and I were looking to start a band, we were on the lookout for members. We ended up jamming together and the rest is history,
Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?
To name a few of my favourite artists are Soundgarden, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Alice in Chains, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Windhand, Mastodon, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Slayer. Listening to these artists growing up really inspired me to write and think outside the box when writing different types of songs and vocal melodies.
Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?
Since I was young I wanted to be a performer but only started playing music after high school. I bought a guitar and taught myself for a while until taking lessons. My brother Dan was a big influence on me and helped shape my tastes in music. I think being a musician is a lifestyle and something that is hard to give up. Once I got the taste for it, I couldn’t let go.
What songs or albums are on your current playlist?
I am currently listening to Royal Thunder’s Wick. I recently can across them and really enjoy their sound. I also recently attended a Megadeth concert, so I’ve been blasting them on my drives lately.
Do you sing in the shower?
Oh course, it’s a good time to hash out any new melodies.
Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?
We are planning on playing shows and festivals and continuing to write new music. We just released our latest EP and we are eager to start writing new music.
Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?
We have just released our latest EP “From the Inside” on March 31st. This album had been in the works for a couple years over the pandemic. We’ve released two music videos for “Tempest” and “Firestone” and are currently working on a 3rd to be released before the summer.
If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?
I would love to play the Metropolis in Montreal. I saw PJ Harvey play there and it was a unique venue and had a really great vibe.
Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?
Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden. It is just so good and brings me back to an amazing time in music.
Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?
Hole, Malibu, it’s a cool song.
If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?
Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Tool, PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Kyuss, Slayer, Windhand.
Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?
I don’t remember the first album I bought but I do remember borrowing a cassette of Nirvana unplugged and listening to it constantly on my Walkman.
