The Metal Asylum Talks To……Sin Direccion

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The name SIN DIRECCION was inspired by a Bad Religion song called No Direction that talks about the seek of validation and the way we look for shallow heroes to guide our lives.  We started rehearsing on 2022 with Sergio Garcia (drums) and myself Gustavo Carpio (vocals).  At the time I was playing guitar and singing.  By the end of 2022 we invited Mark Chavez (guitar) to play the bass, but quickly realized that he was a better guitarist than I was.  At the beginning of 2023 we invited Gabriel Leyva (bass) to one of the rehearsals and he brought his bass and just like that he was part of the band.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We all live pretty close to each other in the 562 area of LA county.  We all knew each other for quite some time because we all train jiu jitsu together and we have a very similar taste in music.  Our tastes in music go from Hardcore to EDM but is punk rock the real common demonitor for all of us.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

My top 3 bands are Bad Religion, Minor Threat and Circle Jerks.  The influence of this bands are in the way they think and approach music, they are direct and with a clear idea of what they want to say in their songs.  They speak to you and are unapologetic in their message.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I think that punk rock makes it being a musician a bit more democratic.  You don’t have to be a musical genius to be able to express your ideas with an impactful melody.  So thanks to punk rock I feel that the ambition to be a musician became attainable.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I’ve been listening a lot to Civic from Australia, I just saw them live recently here in California.  They are great.  Also I’ve been listening to HighSchool from England, it’s an indie band with amazing melodies.

Do you sing in the shower?

Always

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We are gonna be playing on December 9 and after that really start hitting the stages hard.  We are planning on recording our first album by mid 2024.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We have 11 new songs for our new record that we hope to release by mid 2024.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I’ve seen my favorite bands destroying at the Hollywood Palladium so it has to be there.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

So many, but certainly the most influential is Generator from Bad Religion, when I listened to it when I was a 13 year old it really changed my taste in music forever.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Chris Isaak “Always got tonight” .  I really enjoy that album but it ain’t too punk.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Minor Threat would be headlining, original members.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Generator – Bad Religion and I still have it.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Thank you for supporting the band and we are looking to see you on the next show.

The Metal Asylum Talks To……….Within A Reverie!

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

I (Cal) frequently daydream, sometimes with musical inspiration, and I thought the name “Within A Reverie” was very apt and true to that

We started the band after we wrote a song in our vocalists/bassist living room, this was the first rendition of Sora, and from there we worked on songs and started releasing them.

We were part of a band before Covid hit. And after quarantine restrictions were lifted, we started recording for this project and we’ve been at it ever since.

Cal is one of our guitar players who also does some unclean vocals every now and then

Said is the other guitar player who also does some unclean and clean vocals as well

Chris is our bass player and our primary vocalist, doing unclean and clean vocals

We also have had a few other musicians feature on some of our songs

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Cal – Saosin, Silverstein, Senses Fail, Ice Nine Kills, each one of these artists play a huge role in the way that I think about and write songs.

Said – Ice Nine Kills, Escape the Fate, Falling in Reverse, Black Veil Brides, and Bullet for My Valentine. These groups are major influences in the way I write music and approach the songwriting process in general

Chris – He wasn’t here to ask the question, but he likes to take influence from music all around the world. Having a song fully in Japanese was his idea.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Cal – For me I always wanted to be able to create my own music and it’s something that I wanted to do along with other jobs in mind.

Said – I had other plans, but when I started to learn guitar in 6th grade, I felt that being a rockstar was my absolute dream.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Cal – I’ve been bumping a lot of Sublime, Blur (Song 2), and Goldfinger

Said – I’ve been listening to a lot of Arctic Monkeys

Do you sing in the shower?

Said – Oh yeah! He said this very emphatically

Cal – Sometimes, it’s mostly humming

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We plan on releasing a 5 song EP called “There’s Nothing to Hold Onto” including My Fears Have Become My Reality and an additional 4 songs at the end of this year. The date isn’t set just yet.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

It’s not exactly a venue, but performing at a musical festival like Warped Tour would’ve been so awesome

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Cal – Let it Enfold You by Senses Fail has always been an album that I listen to on the regular

Said – Set the World on Fire by Black Veil Brides

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Cal – Having some friends from Toronto, I’ve been a lowkey fan of Drake

Said – Kiss and Tell by Ke$ha

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Bullet for my Valentine would be the opening act, the headliner would be System of a Down

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Said – Ungrateful by Escape the Fate, and yes I do still have it.

Cal – Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard, and yes I do.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Hypnagogia

-Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The band was formed in 2021 by Sotiris, Paris and Pelo in Veria of Greece. With Sotiris playing the bass and main Lyric writing, Pelo on vocals and Lyrics and Paris on guitars and music composition. The idea was to create a concept that has mainly to do with the subconscious mind and mind bending ideas in general. The name Hypnagogia sounded interesting to us since it is the state or transition between wakefulness and sleep. During this state, it’s common to experience visual, audio, or other types of hallucinations.

-Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Yes we all live in the same area, we have known each other since we were kids and we were always interested in listening to music and play our own music. After We met again after a longer period, we decided to form a new band and Hypnagogia was the result.

-Who are your favourite artists/bands and how they influenced your own sound?

It’s hard to pick a favourite artist since there are alot of artists who influenced me over the years. The core to all would be Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, then i was triggered by the scandinavian melodic sound, old In Flames, Dark tranquility, Hypocrisy and more. Finally i will mention Primordial which also played a big part in our music.

-Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Well as a kid, the idea of playing in a band and be a musician was exciting for sure but this was not my goal. Ι had no plans at all. we started playing because it was fun and we enjoyed it together. Doing this for ourselves and friends.

 – What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Primordial – How It Ends, Hypocrisy – Worship, Dødheimsgard – Black Medium Current, Spectral Lore – 11 Days. List will get too long if I continue.

 – Do you sing in the shower?

No, but i used to have an old cassette tape player which I turned on everytime in the shower

-Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Not really, we will just play together and come up with something new someday. I hope that we will have something new ready in the next few years

 – Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We do have a few new songs but they are not ready to be released. Still unpolished.

 – If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Brutal Assault, in the Czech Republic. Love the good and cheap beer!

 – Do you have a favorite album? if so, what is it?

Hard one but I will say Powerslave by Iron Maiden

 – Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Tainted Love – Marilyn Manson.

 – If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Death, Nevermore, Immortal, Darkthrone. Could add a few more but it would get life threatening after that

 – Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I remember just randomly buying Metal albums as a kid without knowing anything about their music. I got “Marduk – Those of the unlight” this way and “Darkthrone – under a funeral moon” and i loved them. I do still have them, yes.

-As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Just be themselves and work hard to achieve their goals.

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Temple of Katharsis

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

I came up with the idea for the name of the band. I wanted something dark and mystical at the same time and that’s how I came up with the name temple of katharsis. All these years many members have passed from the band but at this moment I believe we have the best lineup.

Regarding the history of the band. We were created in the year 2011 by me (Hellmaster666) and the guitarist Homados initially as a project and later when we found other willing members we made a regular band

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

At first, yes, we were all from the same city, but later, when some members left the band, new members were added who happened to be from other areas, without that, of course, making the work of the band difficult, I would say.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I will answer this question on a personal level. My favorite band by far is SLAYER. They have influenced me on many levels and I have drawn a great source of ideas from this band. Of course, for temple of katharsis I have been influenced by and from the Scandinavian scene with more emphasis on Norway

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I always had the appetite and the will to play and compose the music I love so much

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

The new album from cannibal corpse, vomitory, third storm and some tracks from faidra. Their new one impressed me. Also a little bit from taake and horna. In general, however, I don’t have a lot of playlists

Do you sing in the shower?

Emmmmm……nope

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Live performances in and outside of Greece. We definitely want to present the new material live

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Not yet. However, there are many ideas to implement

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Wow! Really tough question. Can I answer 3? hahaha So Germany wacken open air, maybe Latin America as there are maniacs there who like Hellenic metal and maybe in some underground norwegian festival for diehards hahahaha

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

South of heaven, Kill em all, Painkiller, Seventh son of a seventh son, De mysteriis dom sathanas, casus luciferi, endtime divine, some of them that came in my mind right now.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I feel absolutely no guilt about anything I listen to

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Hmmmmm Slayer of course and to tell you the truth I would be looking to find underground underrated bands around the world to showcase them at the event

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Hmmmm….I have the impression that it was Painkiller and thy mighty contract if I remember correctly. Yes, I still have them

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their years of support and I deeply appreciate how much they have supported us

The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Sverd from AmongRuins

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The name came because the band was formed when our country was – and still is- in a big crisis. Financially, politically, sociologically. We are also the remnants of a much more productive and enlightening civilization, among whose ruins we currently live. We are signed to Theogonia records and we currently have 3 full length albums out. We have been playing a lot of shows, amongst which two tours with Wolfheart, and have always been very active as a band, besides the years 2018-2020.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Yes we are all from Athens. We are very good friends that firstly became acquainted through the Greek metal scene, but it turned into a lasting brotherhood.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I personally listen a lot to folk music and a lot of black and atmospheric metal as well as melodic death metal. The influence is not so much directly musical, but more of a spiritual nature. Providing the will and psychological moment to let you create. For example I listen a lot to bands like Satyricon or Cult of Luna, who you cannot directly recognize n our sound, but they provide the power to reach a certain level of creation.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I always had the dream of being in a metal band. As a performer, composer and lyricist. I have been blessed with doing that with a lot of great bands in the last 20 years or so.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I always listen to entire albums. The current are: Soen – Imperial, Satyricon – The Age of Nero, Wolfheart – King of the North, Architects – Holy Hell, Darkthrone – The Underground Resistance, Wardruna – Kvitravn.

Do you sing in the shower?

Never.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We have the first leg of our European tour this November, then we proceed with other gigs starting January 2024.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

There are always new songs haha! But “Land of the Black Sun” was recently released, so we will take this and the next year in support of this album.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Yes, I have a selection of all-time favourite albums. If I have to name one it would be Saivo from Tenhi.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Not exactly guilty pleasures, but there are a few songs from the Greek music.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Metallica, Behemoth and Queen.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Of course I have all my albums and I never stopped buying my music! The first one was in 1997, Dark Saga from Iced Earth.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

We all go together forward. The power of our band is our people. So we dedicate this band to those who were left behind. You are not alone!

The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Necroscum

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

  • The origin of the name simply comes from a drunken evening where we had to find the name of the project that we had just formed and Necroscum appeared. The group was originally formed with former classmates from music school.
From the original members, only me remains on vocals with a new line-up freshly hired.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

  • Before, no, it was actually quite difficult. But with the new members that I have gathered, via musician announcements and various acquaintances in the metal world, we are now all within an hour’s drive in the East of France.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

  • The range of influence is quite vast given that we are all quite eclectic in our choices of music, but for the big influences that made it possible to write Necroscum, I would say Morbid Angel or Dying Fetus.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

  • Yes, initially I was a drummer in another Death Metal band called Warkunt and after I left, I started a training in a music school which was the starting point for Necroscum.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

  • The list is quite long but to name a few I would say Archspire, Lorna Shore, Cryptopsy, Slayer (for eternity) Cannibal Corpse, Dawohl, Skeletal Remains and Pendrak.

Do you sing in the shower?

  • Yes, and sometimes I even rehearse new compositions to the great displeasure of my neighbours.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

  • For this year, it will mainly be to promote our latest album and also to book gigs to start 2024 on stage as much as possible.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

  • It’s now been a month since our album ‘Gates of Misery’ was released so composing new music is not our absolute priority, but there is already some in the desk drawer.

If you could play at any venue in the world, where would you choose?

  • For nostalgia’s sake, I would say on the Altar of Hellfest, because I have lots of memories there. But in reality it’s more an excited audience that makes you want to crash the stage of this or that venue.

  • Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?
  • ‘Reign Suprem’ by the almighty Dying Fetus

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

  • Not really a guilty pleasure, but for what is furthest from what we do, I would tend to say Mozart.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

  • I would say Necroscum first, if we organize the biggest show in the world, we might as well participate on stage! 😉
And for the top of the show the big return of Slayer, Pantera, AC/DC and Metallica. There you fill the largest stadium/hall in the world.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

  • It’s ‘Icon’ by Benighted and yes, I still have it.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

  • Yeah, thank you for supporting the metal scene and above all for coming to watch shows because the bands you see in small venues today are perhaps those that you will see in some years headlining big festivals.

Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there anything further that you would like to add?

  • Thank you for relaying news from underground and we are pleased to meet readers or journalists at our gigs. We will have a drink together with pleasure.

The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Laureen

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

I’m a solo artist and this is my real name.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

I’m from the munich area.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

My favourite bands are Bring Me The Horizon and The Pretty Reckless. I grew up with these bands and I love how they do different styles in the rock genre. They showed me that I can do whatever I feel.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was a kid, I always wanted to be a singer. So I originally started to do music in my native language, so in German, but I also grew up with English. I didn’t had other plans, music was and will be my number one.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Bring Me the Horizon- Show Moses, Bad Omens – Dethrone, The Pretty Reckless – Hit me like a man and Five Finger Death Punch – Wrong side of heaven. A lot more but these are the main ones I love to listen to at the moment.

Do you sing in the shower?

Yes I do, my poor neighbours lol

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

I recently released my EP “Sick of Hiding” and this is my first EP I ever put out, so this project cost me and my partner Selly a lot of time and creative processes, but we had so much fun while writing this EP and its finally out for all our listeners. Next year we are planning to release singles and maaaybe put out an Album, but this is not sure.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We have a few songs that are ready to be heard, but the main focus is on the EP right now.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Madison Square Garden! Just imagine having this much people there to only see you. This would be a dream come true.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

All-time favourite is and will be “Sempiternal” from Bring Me The Horizon, but for a few months I really like to hear “THE DEATH OF PEACE AND MIND” by Bad omens.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

No, I’m very open about genres, so nothing I hear is guilty pleasure for me haha

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Definitely Bring Me The Horizon and The Pretty Reckless.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Yes. I was 16 years old and The Pretty Reckless released “Who you selling for”. I went to a shop and bought it immediately. I don’t think I have it anymore.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Do what you want to do, as long you are hurting no one. Believe in yourself, you can achieve everything you want when you put effort to it and you are not alone, if you are struggling with problems, reach out to someone you trust or for someone professional. Much love!
