Rich Kid Express – Under The Purple Lights

Rich Kid Express have just released their brand-new EP, “Under The Purple Lights,” and I must say it is incredible.

But before we get onto that, let’s have a little look at who Rich Kid Express is. Well to answer that one, Rich Kid Express is the rock project of the multi-instrumentalist Rob Richardson. He mixes different styles, including 70s glam rock and 80s hard rock, and takes heavy inspiration from artists such as, KISS, AC/DC, W.A.S.P, and Spinal Tap.

So, let’s get into this EP, “Under The Purple Lights” was released last month and it consists of five different tracks.

Starting off with “U Never….” we are welcomed with an upbeat, energetic rock track! Beginning with an incredible drum beat, and awesome guitars, we find ourselves instantly hooked! Shortly after, The Rich Kid Express joins in with his brilliant vocals! His voice is quite sharp and very raw, and I just love it.

My personal favourite track of the album is the second track, “Hard Time Lady.” This one has some clear 80s rock inspiration, and everything about it is amazing! It is incredibly catchy, and I just cannot help but listen to this song on repeat all day long.

The final song, “The Dotted Line” is the perfect end to this collection, however it without a doubt leaves you wanting more! This one is another upbeat, rock tune, and you just cannot fault it.

Be sure to go and give the incredible soloist a listen to, and he will, without a doubt, blow you away with his talent!

9 O’Clock Nasty – Culture War 23

9 O’Clock Nasty are an incredible trio (Pete, Ted and Sydd), who create some exceptional music. Hailing from Leicester, the trio have returned with their brand-new album, “Culture War 23”.

“Culture War 23” was released on September 30th, and this rock album is certainly not one that you want to miss. This album consists of 13 incredible tracks, kicking off with, “Too Cool”. This one is an upbeat, groovy rock track that will certainly get you off of your feet. From the second this track began, I was instantly hooked. The music is very rocky, and there is no denying that all the instrumentalists are immensely talented, and the vocals are just brilliant.

The third tune, “Make Your Ghost,” is another upbeat, catchy track and I just cannot fault them. This one you will certainly find yourself singing along to it, whilst dancing along to the music. 9 O’Clock Nasty are undoubtedly incredibly talented.

My personal favourite track is “The Gastronaut.” This one is slightly more relaxed, and we really get to witness the artist’s incredible vocals.

Another track that really caught my eye is, “Rise Up.” This one is very different from the other tracks on the album, and I think that is what makes it so amazing. Being more mellow, and slower, we experience a more relaxed environment. This is one that you can sing your heart out to.

The final track, “Bird Of Happiness” is a collaboration between 9 O’Clock Nasty and Meg Cratty and there is no denying that it is an amazing end the album. This track leaves you wanting more, but it also brings joy and happiness. All the vocalists are so talented, and I just cannot praise them enough.

So be sure to give “Culture War 23” a little listen to now, and you will love it within seconds!

The Routine – Don’t Give Me Hope

The Routine are a four-piece band from Cambridgeshire who first formed in 2019 and consists of members Liam Palmer (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ben Taylor (lead guitar), Ben Nunn (bass) and Mark Thomson (drums). Don’t Give Me Hope is the band’s latest single and was released on 22/09/2023.

The track is a roaring power pop / rock number with influences from bands such as Foo Fighters, Feeder, Bush, Franz Ferdinand, and this is not a band who afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves.

With catchy hooks and melodies, this is a track that the listener will still be humming long after they have finished listening to it, and the singalong lyrics means that it will be sung out by many. The lead vocals are powerful and strong, and, with just enough grit, they are immensely emotional too. The backups vocals accompany the leads perfectly and as the song progresses so does the intensity of the vocals and lyrics.

Musically, this is an awesome track. The guitar riffs and hooks are heavy when they need to be, yet are more melodic at other times, really generating a great contrast as the song develops. The drum and bass sections are tight and together they keep the track solid and on track. The guitar solos are absolutely fantastic, and all the instruments really gel well together.

This is a totally awesome track that I had to listen to four or five times as the pull it has on the listener is just phenomenal. I will definitely be checking out the debut album when it is released! Awesome track.

Gary Dranow – The Cy Of War

Gary Dranow and his band of merry men are back with a new single, The Cry Of War, which is from his upcoming double album Never Give Up and was released on 28/09/2023. The track is inspired by the Ukrainian peoples fight against tyranny and the right for self-governance, and combines roaring guitars, pounding drums, and soaring vocals.

A hard rock classic, this track features heavy, stomping riffs right from the start and this sets the tone for the rest of the track. Influenced by bands such as Counting Crows, The Verve, Oasis, Train, and Bryan Adams, this track really does have elements of all sorts of genres showing through and this really creates a great vibe to the track.

I have reviewed lots of music by Gary Dranow and the various incarnations of his band, and this is by far the heaviest track I have heard, all the instruments working in unison to generate some interesting hooks and melodies. The guitar work is absolutely fantastic, from the riffage to the solos that really are spine-tingling, and the drumming is out of this world, hammering and thumping, the drummer certainly knows how to strike those skins!

The vocals are classic in style, powerful enough to get the message of the lyrics across sincerely and effectively, and gritty enough to really an edge to the track. And with backup vocals that match the leads in every way, there really is a brilliant depth and dimension to the song.

Another brilliant track from this very talented bunch of guys. Keep them coming, they just get better and better. Absolutely fantastic track with a very important message to spread, and there is no better way to spread crucial points than with music!

Chorosia – Stray Dogs

Chorosia are a prog / post sludge band from Vienna in Austria and Stray Dogs, their third release, is their latest EP, released on 15/09/2023.

The EP has five tracks and is a total of thirty-five minutes in length, kicking off with the 11-minute-long eponymous track, Stray Dogs, and I must say it’s a thirty-five-minute sonic journey into the raw, brutal world of this awesome band.

The galloping guitars are heavy, and the riffs are thunderous, really kicking the listener in the stomach (in a good way!) and the pounding drums really keep up the momentum of the tracks. The guitar solos ae clean and excellently executed, really making the hairs on your arms stand on end, and combined with meaty basslines, the resulting onslaught really is a treat for the ears! Musically, this EP has it all and will appeal to fans of anything from death metal to melodic metal, sludge, and everything in between.

The progressiveness of the music really stands out, with lots going on behind the vocals, and this really keeps the listener engaged at all times. This is an EP that really needs more than one listen through to fully appreciate everything it has to offer and does not disappoint in any way shape or form.

The vocals have a combination of clean vocals with death metal growls, and this makes for a great contrast, not only from song to song but during each track too. The pace and timing changes keep things fresh and the different styles on the EPO really shows how diverse and talented this bunch of guys are.

Please head on over to social media, Spotify, or YouTube to check out this formidable band for yourself. I am searching for their previous two albums as we speak, both which left listeners awestruck, and I am sure if this EP is anything to go by, then those will be just as epic.

Totally fantastic (and the brief interlude that is the track Tintinnabula only gives you a minute and a half of respite before you are thrown back into the ambush of the rest of the EP!!)

Track Listing:

1) Stray Dogs

2) The Shrike (Fire Assault)

3) Tintinnabula

4) Reflections

5) Hands, Switchblades and Vile Vortices
