Mary KilS – Long Silence

What an absolutely beautiful track!

Mary KilS is a French singer/songwriter and Long Silence is her latest track.

Sung in French, Long Silence is a classic rock ballad/love song. The vocals are haunting in themselves but singing in French just gives them another dimension. They are powerful and strong and, yet I also feel that if this lady wanted to rock it up a bit, she would definitely pull it off. The emotion in her voice is clear to hear, and this song really could reduce a listener to tears.

The song starts slowly and builds up into a crescendo before coming back down again, leaving the listener experiencing all sorts of emotions as this song is like a book and takes the listener on a journey, full of ups and downs.

Musically the track is spot on with great guitar work and a solid bass/drum section and with a hint of The Cranberries in there, the music and the lyrics match perfectly.

I would love to hear more from Mary KilS and will definitely be keeping an ear out for new releases.

Great job!

Denials – Past Lives EP

Denials are a post hardcore duo hailing from Wales and Manchester. Consisting of Steve White on vocals and Lee Crimes playing all the other instruments featured on the EP, the band was formed after a 6-year hiatus from other bands and the guys love of making music was reignited during lockdown.

Past Lives is a four track EP, which deals with issues such as abandonment, religious exploitation, struggles with mental health and relationships, turning notions of desperation and hopelessness into things of beauty, and I am sure a lot of people will be able to relate.

One of the things that hits you right in the face about this EP is the emotion that the singer emits, the listener can really hear the realness and the rawness in his voice. He has a wide range, and this helps him portray these emotions superbly.

The guitarwork is awesome and the drumming is blistering, and the fact this all came from one man recording at home is just mind-blowing!

This 18-minute EP crosses many genres, from rock, to indie, and this is what gives them a unique sound, 00’s inspired post-hardcore with a modern twist.

Although not ground-breaking or, indeed, appealing to everyone, this is a solid EP, that is deep and dark and makes you actually stop and think about the issues it tackles, musically progressive, yet rocky in places.

I would like to hear more from this band and will be keeping a keen ear out for anything new they release.

Fantastic job by a new band who I am sure will go far!

Glytsh – S@vage

I love it when something completely different from everything else drops in my inbox to be reviewed. It reminds me that there IS new music out there waiting to be discovered and all these ideas that “rock is dead” are just pie in the sky, something people stuck in time warps like spout every now and then.

Glytsh are a multi-national female duo and S@vage is their new single, released on 30/09/2022. Comprising of French singer Jennifer Diehl (aka Luna Blake) and swiss guitarist Claire Genoud (aka Hella Sin), the duo is based in the UK and formed in the early part of 2022 (not that you would know this from the professionalism and talent that comes across in this track.)

With their music being described as badass and empowering, heavy yet unique, there is not one genre of music (let alone metal) that can define these girls’ sound. Everything from metal and funk to electronic, rock and grunge can be heard in this track, and I love how it emits a Rob Zombie-esque vibe (who doesn’t like a bit of Rob Zombie eh?)

There is a great mix of vocals from the clean, to the screams, to the distorted and this gives the track an almost industrial feel. Whether this is industrial rock, industrial metal or industrial something else, I am not sure, but I do really like the tone this track gives off.

The changes of tempo throughout the track really work and I was almost a bit sad when the track ended as I was bouncing in my chair to it the while way through. If I had to pick one word to describe this song it would be BOMBASTIC!!!! I totally fell in love with the bounciness of it and I really can’t wait to hear more from this great duo.

A fantastic job well done, girls!

Gas Station Pizza – Outside Of The Box

Trying to find information on Gas Station Pizza actually just made me hungry as the internet kept showing me pictures of pizza and not much about the band!!

Florida based, Gas Station Pizza are a four-piece band consisting of Jason Banning on vocals/guitar/synths, Javier Perez on guitar, Cody Nordine on bass and Elden Santos on drums.

Defining their sound is somewhat difficult as one minute they sound like a traditional punk band, and the next they have thrown elements of thrash metal in, only to have noise-rock influences the next.

With a genre-fusing hardcore punk / metal sound they have also paid homage to 90’s punk rock bands, and this combination has given them a sound all of their own.

From noisy drums to electronic synth sounds to full on thrash guitar riffs, this album does seem to have it all. With 10 hard-hitting, catchy songs, each track has something different about it, meaning there really is something for everyone.

Recorded in December 2021, the album was mixed and produced in 2022 and finally released on 23rd September 2022 and has proved just how insanely talented the band is.

Some tracks on the album are heavier while others are more soothing and then you get the totally off the wall “Punk Rock Alarm Clock,” an instrumental with a punk rock background mixed together with a load of zany noises and sound effects!!

I am going to be keeping my eye on this band, just the complete zaniness of them is something to follow!

Kevin The Persian – Rock Is Dead

If you ever you wanted a track to dance around your living room to, using a mop as an air guitar and a hairbrush as a microphone (obviously not at the same time!) then this is the track for you!

Kevin the Persian is a hard-rock artist based in New Orleans and the track Rock Is Dead is from his new album Southern Dissonance released in 2022.

Heavily influenced by 80’s and 90’s hard rock as well as grunge and alternative rock, Kevin has thrown in some metal vibes too to give himself a sound unlike any other.

Kicking off with a cool bass intro, the track has a heavy guitar line mixed with melodies and a pure old school rock vibe. There is a fat bass sound and poundings drums (how drums should always be if you ask me!) with great guitar riffs which gives the song a groovy and melodic, yet passionate and energetic sound. The vocals are awesome, a voice just gravely enough to give the track a raw edginess without losing the hard rock feel but one that fits perfectly with the track.

The song pays tribute to old school rock yet suggests this is a dying genre, an absolute must listen to track for anyone who loves this type of rock.

Entertaining, fresh, and vibrant, this song is intense, never letting up from the moment is starts to the moment it ends, and once it does, you will just want to hit the play button and listen to it over and over again.

I know…I did!!

Advents – White Flag

Metalcore has always been a genre that had eluded me for a long time, but I am now starting to get more and more into it and with bands like Advents coming to the forefront of the genre, I will be a huge fan in no time!

Advents are a five-piece band from New York, USA, and wow what a track from their debut EP!

Mixing aggression, passion and vulnerability, the theme of the song, “the flaws that come with being human and finding the strength to move through life’s hardest trials,” will hit hard with a lot of listeners.

A great mix of clean vocals and metalcore screams, along with the crunching riffs of the guitars and impressive drumming, this band is enthusiastic, energetic, and aggressive. Switching effortlessly and seamlessly from hard rock to alternative rock to full on metalcore, these guys could have been doing this for years! The track is well produced, and their professionalism and talent are clear to see.

I love the changes of tempo throughout the song, meaning there is always something going on to keep the listener engaged, and flitting from hard hitting aggression to polished melodies shows just how diverse a band they really are.

With Bring Me The Horizon, Falling In Reverse and Parkway Drive vibes, I personally think this band could go far, and I would love to see them do just that!

Please go and check them out, I think you would regret it if you didn’t!

We Are To Blame – Breathe

Ok, let me give you my honest opinion on this track by Swedish melodic metal band, which can be summed up in just one word…WOW!

The band is fronted by Alice, a pop singer who answered a advert looking for a “pop singer for a metal project” and what a voice she has. Reminiscent of bands such as Evanescence, After Forever and later Nightwish, Alice had no experience of working in the metal world, but she couldn’t have been a better fit with her strong yet not overly operatic voice, which I personally think gives the tracks more singalongability!

The song has great, crunching riffs and the bass and drum section are awesome, keeping the song tight and together throughout. There is a fantastic guitar solo midway through the track, and this doesn’t take away from the raw, edgy vibe the song has.

Despite what a lot of people say about synths not belonging in metal, I think this track has great use of them, creating a symphonic, electronic sound that fits perfectly with the theme of the song.

With power metal, melodic death metal and progressive metal influences, along with the pop influences of the singer, this band stands with one foot in the metal genre and the other in the pop, exposing them to whole range of listeners.

The more I listen to this song, the more I like it and I, for one, can’t wait to hear more from this band!

Sol Ether – I: Golden Head

It appears to be the morning for me to listen to music that is intended to keep me awake and on my toes (despite it being Monday!) And the band Sol Ether have certainly done that with their brutal death metal album “I: Golden Head.”

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 2017 after a drunken meeting at a gig (how else would a death metal band meet?), Sol Ether are Torann (vocals, composition, arrangements, overtone flute) and Tellus (bass, guitars, composition, arrangements) and this, their debut album, released six years later, features John Porello (guitars, composition, arrangements, recording) and Matt Guglielmo (drums, drum engineering, mixing and mastering).

The album kicks off right from the start and is 45 minutes of epic, chugging traditional death metal, with a bit of Viking metal thrown in, some power metal added, and a pinch of doom metal sprinkled in for good measure, giving this band a sound that is almost unique.

Pounding, double kick drums (which I sooo love!), thick, slow guitar riffs and a heavy bass line all brought together with traditional death metal vocals, give this album a dark and gothic, yet brutal and gloomy sound.

The vocals mix together death metal growls, black metal screams and the occasional sacrificial chanting which portray the Celtic mythology themes perfectly but, unlike some death metal bands, the lyrics are always able to be understood.

Pace changes during an album are always a good thing and this has it in abundance. Each track has a chugging and crushing sound, the bands raw, old-school brutality and sound shining through, but this does not take away from the album’s clear production.

If you are a fan of bands such as Enslaved, Bathory, Morbid Angel, Paradise Lost and Dismember then you are going to love Sol Ether.

But don’t take my word for it, head on over to their Bandcamp page and download the album for yourself!

You won’t be disappointed.

Forgotten Garden – Memoriam

Forgotten Garden are a soft rock duo from Scotland with dark, gothic post-punk influences and Memoriam is their latest single.

Fronted by Inês on vocals, with Danny playing most of the instruments, this is a very talented pairing, who compliment each other wonderfully.

The vocals have a very Enya(ish) feel to them, beautiful yet haunting, and lyrics (yes, I did look them up) are sad and morose. Musically, every single note on every single instrument hits you in the heart and moves you in a way that only music can.

This feels like a song written from the heart and, whether it has been produced from personal experience or not, it certainly makes you think, and it definitely makes you feel.

I would be interested in hearing what the rest of the EP has to offer so I will definitely be checking that out but all in all, this is a great track and one that I think will appeal to both the rock/indie genres as well as the pop and even the alternative scene.

Great job!

Call In Dead – Deepest Condolences

Well, this track certainly got a dreary Monday morning off to a flying start! Who needs coffee when you can have Call In Dead!

The track kicks off straight away, plunging you directly in to the centre of the song. At just two minutes and two seconds in length, a long intro would just not have worked. But despite the track being relatively short, its two minutes of pure metalized punk!

The drumming is absolutely awesome, it’s a good job the track is the length it is as I am sure the drummer would be totally knackered with anything longer, there is THAT much energy in his playing.

The guitar work has a (big!) hint of The Offspring about it and that can only be a good thing. But it’s the vocals that I think makes this track stand out. With a mixture of traditional punk, heavy metal with a few death growls thrown in for good measure, this track will appeal to a wide range of listeners, not just punk fans.

I’m not a huge listener of punk….but I loved it!
