The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Axel de Montalembert and Adrien Djouadou from Phoebus the Knight

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Axel (Vocals/ Storyteller): Phoebus the Knight is above all a character at the heart of a story, that of the secret order of the knights of Heliopolis, a circle of individuals sworn to uplift humanity intellectually, physically and spiritually. To this end, they fight, among other things, against the forces of evil embodied in our story by the Beast and his minions, the black mages. They swear only by the domination of humanity, and by eternal wars allowing them to feed on souls and blood.

Adrien D. (Guitar/Musical composition) : First of all, Axel did a tribute project, covering songs by Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation. It was the seed of what would become later Phoebus the Knight. He told me about the project in the summer of 2019 and asked me to compose for the band. As a professional opera singer, I was really motivated by the idea of writing music driven by a great story and that is what Axel was proposing. We respectively composed and wrote our first album, “Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror” and then I began to search for musicians.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Axel: I met Adrien in 2017 and offered him the project in 2019. Adrien Djouadou and Noémie are currently living in Switzerland but they should move to France, Adrien Guingal is living near Montpellier in the south of France, Guillaume is living near Nancy in the east of France and I live in Paris !

Adrien D. : We asked my fiancée, Noémie Allet, who started to play bass to be our bass player and female vocalist, I contacted my childhood friend Adrien Guingal to play the guitar with me and, in front of the difficulty to find a good drummer, I typed “French metal drummer” on Youtube, ended on Guillaume Remih’s channel, was enthusiastic by his playing and sent him a message to ask him to join. Fortunately, he agreed and we are now a band of great friends !

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Adrien D. : My favorite artists in the genre we are playing are Rhapsody, Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, Fairyland and Dream Theater. They were the bases to start composing for Phoebus the Knight. But I didn’t wanted to do a copy of those bands so I went really deep into classical repertoire to bring to the music this classical vibe. Composers like Verdi, Mozart, Bach, Puccini, Wagner or Debussy are amongst my favorites. You can definitely hear some of them and their influence in “The Cursed Lord”.

Axel: Definitely Nightwish. If this group didn’t exist, I probably wouldn’t have become a musician. They embody a true example for me. I remain a huge fan of their former singer Tarja Turunen (which did not prevent me from loving Annette and Floor) who is in my eyes an exceptional singer and an example as an artist.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans ?

Axel: Since I had my revelation in 2012, I had only this desire. But it took me years to figure out how to get there. I changed my professional career for Phoebus the Knight in 2019, and for nothing in the world I will do anything else. God has given us artists the ability to create worlds, and to make others dream. Isn’t there a better present?

Adrien D. : I wanted to compose and play music since my childhood. I was already writing songs at the age of 11. When I discovered metal, my dream was to start a career with my own band. I played in several bands, Frost, Nobelium and Sentinhell, then I started to study operatic singing as my main band, Nobelium, ended up splitting. After some years of study, I started to sing professionally, I met Axel and you know the rest. I was really missing metal in my life and now, playing this style again in Phoebus the Knight and Hartlight is making me very happy.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Axel: A lot, but playlists aren’t my thing as I can’t listen to songs out of order. I have to start an album or an EP and finish listening to it before doing anything else. I see albums and EPs as a full work, just like a book.

Adrien D. : Honestly, I am currently listening a lot to “Les Noces” by Stravinsky as I have to sing on stage the bass solo part at the end of June. It is quite complicated music with a lot of odd metrics so it is good to get used to it while listening and reading the score. Recently, I also quite enjoyed the album of Angus McSix also ! It is really ear candy !

Do you sing in the shower?

Axel: Every day, it is very pleasant.

Adrien D. : Not at all ! I sing enough everyday ! Shower is to relax haha !

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Axel: We have a lot of things planned, but I don’t know if I can announce them all. What I can tell you is that the second album is almost finished being written and composed and the novel accompanying the Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror album should be finished writing this fall. We have lots of surprises in store for you that you have no idea!

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Adrien D. : Actually, on the 21st of June, we will release our new EP called “The Cursed Lord”. It is a 30 minutes long EP with a lot of classical music in it. It is the first of a serie of EPs that will tell side stories of the Phoebusverse and deepen its lore. In this one, the knights of Heliopolis will investigate on disparitions in the land of Ray and will end up discovering how Gilles de Rais, the lord of the land, turned to black magic and darkness after the death of Jeanne d’Arc. They will fight him to bring him to justice.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Axel: I dream of playing in Finland, going to the lands of Nightwish and Tarja would be a consecration for me.

Adrien D. : I would love to play in the Arène de Nîmes ! It’s near my homeland and it is the place where I first saw Rammstein at the age 12. They were my absolute favorite band at that time.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Axel: It’s a terribly complicated question. Could be “Wishmaster” from Nightwish.

Adrien D. : Honestly it is impossible to answer that. However, I can quote albums that marked me like : The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden), Mutter (Rammstein), Octavarium and Black Clouds and Silver Linings (Dream Theater), The Power of the Dragonflame (Rhapsody), Once (Nightwish), Midian (Cradle of Filth), Of Wars in Osyrhia (Fairyland) or Dum Spiro Spero (Dir En Grey). But it’s far from being an exhaustive list !

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Adrien D. : Absolutely ! I kind of like to listen to some Falling in Reverse or Escape the Fate sometimes. I really enjoy the grooviest songs by Bruno Mars or even some K-Pop like Red Velvet sometimes. I can also consider some power metal music as guilty pleasures, like the Angus McSix album I quoted before. It’s a great album, don’t take me wrong, but I can’t help but to put it in this case. Honestly, I can enjoy any music that has great arrangements and work put into it, even it’s the most candy sounding music or the most mainstream one.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Axel: In all modesty, Phoebus the Knight, Nightwish, Epica. I obviously do not specify the order of passage (laughs)

Adrien D. : I would do a Festival with all the bands I quoted and even more, and, of course, Phoebus the Knight and Hartlight !

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Adrien D. : The very first album was Discovery by Daft Punk. I still have it ! And the very first metal album was Reise Reise by Rammstein.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Axel: Of course, thank you for supporting us. Soon the project will evolve in a way that will exceed your expectations. See you soon !

Adrien D. : I want to thank all the people that are supporting us, listening to our music and believing in us ! We won’t let you down ! I hope you will all enjoy the new EP !

Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

Adrien D. : You can find and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Bandcamp and Youtube ! We also have a website that is phoebustheknight.fr where you can find all of our merch !

We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there is anything further that you would like to add?

Axel: Thank you very much for the time you gave us and we look forward to meeting you in concert.

Adrien D. : Thank you very much for this interview and for the work you are doing ! It was a great pleasure to talk with you !

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Kilmore

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Dan and I (Heather) are siblings and have played together in past projects. We formed Kilmore in 2013 as a new project together. We had moved to Halifax in the 90s and grew up listening to all types of music including grunge, rock, rap, country and metal but heavy music really stood out as our favourite.

Shortly after forming the band and beginning to write songs Neil Spence (bass) and Lor Sangster (drums) joined our musical journey.  Neil and Lor grew up in Nova Scotia and also played in the local music scene. Later in 2019, Lor moved on to new projects and Jon MacIsaac joined the band on drums to complete our current line-up.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We all grow up in Nova Scotia and were part of the Halifax music scene.  Halifax has a pretty vibrant music scene for a smaller city, and everyone tends to run into each other at one time or another. Since Dan and I were looking to start a band, we were on the lookout for members. We ended up jamming together and the rest is history,

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

To name a few of my favourite artists are Soundgarden, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Alice in Chains, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Windhand, Mastodon, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Slayer. Listening to these artists growing up really inspired me to write and think outside the box when writing different types of songs and vocal melodies.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was young I wanted to be a performer but only started playing music after high school. I bought a guitar and taught myself for a while until taking lessons. My brother Dan was a big influence on me and helped shape my tastes in music. I think being a musician is a lifestyle and something that is hard to give up. Once I got the taste for it, I couldn’t let go.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I am currently listening to Royal Thunder’s Wick. I recently can across them and really enjoy their sound. I also recently attended a Megadeth concert, so I’ve been blasting them on my drives lately.

Do you sing in the shower?

Oh course, it’s a good time to hash out any new melodies.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We are planning on playing shows and festivals and continuing to write new music. We just released our latest EP and we are eager to start writing new music.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We have just released our latest EP “From the Inside” on March 31st. This album had been in the works for a couple years over the pandemic.  We’ve released two music videos for “Tempest” and “Firestone” and are currently working on a 3rd to be released before the summer.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I would love to play the Metropolis in Montreal. I saw PJ Harvey play there and it was a unique venue and had a really great vibe.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden. It is just so good and brings me back to an amazing time in music.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Hole, Malibu, it’s a cool song.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Tool, PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Kyuss, Slayer, Windhand.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I don’t remember the first album I bought but I do remember borrowing a cassette of Nirvana unplugged and listening to it constantly on my Walkman.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Thanks for listening and engaging with us. You make it all worth it!

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Sunbeam Overdrive

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

« Sunbeam Overdrive » is a song from one of Tom’s former projects, about speed racing records established at Lake Bonneville (Utah, USA). « Sunbeam » is one of the car brands that were involved, and « Overdrive » hints at the blinding sun reflecting upon the endless horizons of the salty lake.

As for the band’s history, Sunbeam Overdrive derives from Tom’s former project “Tom Abrigan and the Shrunken Heads”, which was more solo guitar-oriented, where Tom was both lead singer and lead guitarist. “Sunbeam Overdrive” was actually the last song written for this project and marked a turn towards a more “full band” songwriting. That was the inception of our band, with a first show at Euroblast Festival 2019 in Germany, before Karim joined on lead vocals in late 2019… but then the pandemic happened so the band focused on composing and recording the first album throughout 2020 and 2021; getting back on stage in late 2021 to open for Psykup and Ze Gran Zeft.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

All band members are from the south of France except Karim (vocals), but it’s been 9 years since he settled in Marseille so the area’s become pretty familiar to him!

Bruno (bass) and Karim (vocals) met Tom (guitars) when they went recording at his studio with their respective bands at the time, and Laurent (drums) has been around for a long time in the professional music scene of France’s South. So, we all knew each other before the band was formed, and Tom picked the other three members because he thought they were the right choice when Sunbeam Overdrive was created in late 2019.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

We all grew up listening to bands like Tool, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, David Bowie, Meshuggah, Fu Manchu, The Beatles, Devin Townsend, Deftones, Porcupine Tree, Down, Corrosion Of Conformity, Dillinger Escape Plan, Chevelle, Filter… So it felt pretty natural for us to express ourselves through music that blends the richness and sophistication of prog with the savage tones of 90s alternative rock.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Well for both Tom and Karim, the starting point was hearing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”: Tom the guitarist was 11, at his grandparents’ with his brother in front of the small TV they used to watch cartoons on, and there they saw that video clip. When the chorus came in they were like « he’s shouting, that is awesome! ». As for Karim, the band’s vocalist, when he was 13, he heard that same Nirvana song played on the radio on the way to school, and he instantly knew that’s what he wanted to do, one way or another.

If it weren’t music, well Tom has developed a passion and talent for fine coffee-making, so he would probably go for barista. As for Karim, apart from music, travel is what keeps him going and he’s done a few bike trips across Europe so far, retrieving a genuine feeling of adventure. So, he would probably just travel on a bike, satisfied with the most basic comfort possible, and feeding on whatever life offers on the way.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Tom loves Sleep Token’s recent singles, and he also discovered Dark Atom recently in a Spotify playlist we are on, and thought it was great. And most lately: Astrodeath !

Karim really enjoyed the last Avatar record; they really do their own thing with consistency and talent. Also, the last Leprous album takes its whole dimension once you’ve seen it played live like it’s augmented sort of.

Do you sing in the shower?

Paradoxically not really… A shower can be a moment of silent contemplation, or listening to music or radio podcasts, but not singing. But hey, sometimes bathrooms can have funny reverb to play with!

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Well, we have a couple of shows in our region right after the release, especially an exciting night opening for ten56 at Toulon’s Omega Live venue. Beyond that, we will be looking into our possibilities to work with a booking agency to get on tour in other parts of France and beyond borders, because the sunbeam needs to travel across Europe soon! The plan: get people to listen to our album « Diama », play shows everywhere we can, share the stage with cool bands, and start to prepare new material for future releases…

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Our album “Diama” is out since May 12, and it’s about elevation, travel, adventure, and energy. It’s meant to lift you up yet make you endure the storm both inside and outside of yourself. It comes with the video clip for the single “Diama”; and we also released one video in March (“Out Of Plato’s Cave”) and one single in April (“Crimson Stains”).

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

There are so many, but let’s say Hellfest, because it’s become France’s flagship event for metal, and one of Europe’s biggest festivals, improving every year, and with the most immersive out-of-this-world site… We’ve been going for years now, Karim as a festival-goer and Tom for guitar/amp/string/pickup showcases, and playing there as a band would kind of affirm our place among the flourishing French scene.

If we look beyond French borders, one of the many places we haven’t played and would love to, Karim would have loved to play New York’s legendary CBGB, but unfortunately, it’s been closed for a few years now… Otherwise, well, London’s Brixton Academy would be awesome.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

That’s no easy question to answer, so here are 5 albums we picked as a band:

Soundgarden – Superunknown

It was hard to choose between Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, but let’s say “Superunknown” is one of those records that contain so many absolute instant classics… just like Pearl Jam’s “Ten”… sheesh see???

Porcupine Tree – In Absentia

Ethereal, almost mystic at times, yet solidly grounded, “In Absentia” takes you on a hypnotic journey before even leaving Earth. This album is quintessential. Yes, we said it.

Pantera – Far Beyond Driven

This record represents the perfect balance between finesse and brutality, mutually feeding each other.

Tool – Lateralus

This is the ultimate expression of progressive alternative music. Period.

Meshuggah – Destroy Erase Improve

Together with “Chaosphere” (oops…), this album marks the birth of a genre that still remains defined as “modern” to this day… The vibrant new scene owes everything to these two records, which date back almost 3 decades now! Did you say “modern” tones?

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Oh, we have many… the band members listen to and play an extremely wide variety of music genres, especially for professional purposes.

I guess the first one that comes to mind for me (Karim), would be Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction”, which is an absolute timeless banger. Can’t help but shake those limbs when it comes to parties. I actually enjoy some “aggro” electro…

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

OK let’s get rowdy:

Drums: Eloy Casagrande (Sepultura)

Bass: Mike Inez (Alice in Chains)

Guitars: Greg Kubacki (Car Bomb) & Josh Homme (QOTSA)

Everything else: Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails)

Vocals: Mike Patton (Faith No More)

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Linkin Park’s “Meteora” for Karim: I still have it, along with tens of CDs from that era, in my car! Some of them are original, and some of them are burned because those were the days when people would burn their favorite playlists on CDs as gifts to their crush, and it was so adorable. This and putting cryptic emo song lyrics as MSN status haha omg millennials….

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

We would like to send them the deepest of cheers and thanks because they have been consistently supportive, even before we released any music, they believed in what we were and what we were planning to do. And now that the album is out, we’ve been getting so much positive feedback so it really helps going forward, and we’re on our way to adding new fans to share our music with!

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Isxover

Can you tell us about the origin of the name?

The name means to “cross” something you don’t like about yourself or putting an end to a relationship/feelings , it actually can be applied to more things than just that, i see it as finally putting an end or facing something.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

In this project I work with musicians as session artists, since I compose the song and most of the parts.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sounds?

The biggest influences would be “Tim skold” (SKOLD), “Marilyn Manson”, “Adam Gontier” (Three days grace), “Chester Bennington”, “Benjamin Burnley” (Breaking Benjamin).

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I started learning how to play a guitar and singing at 18, so I never thought it would become my true passion in life, but then I started living with the music, taking it everywhere, and really, diving deep in to this parallel world, it’s been 10 years and now I’m starting to move on a different level as an artist. I have my solo project “ISXOVER” (Melodic/Metal, Industrial), my band “D.R.I.P” (Alt Rock) and my personal songs (Andre Oliva) (Various genres) I love music genres that have a soul and something to show.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Tim skold – Void
Marilyn manson – Suicide is painless
Ludovico Technique – Live as myself

Do you sing in the shower?

I do, but I mostly think about everything that has ever happened in my past before that point and look at the future with a bit of resignation, but I know I’m made for big things!

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

My plans for the rest of the year is to keep gigging in my city and continue to build up my name as a brand that englobes everything i do or im capable of doing, i’m on the search of like minded people around the world.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Ludovico Technique – Live as myself I’m currently working on the song that precedes “DEATH ITSELF” , my first single on the self titled album, it’s a concept album about death and the afterlife, the next song is called “VOID”, if you follow me on instagram “@isxover” you might get to hear a bit.

If you could play at any venue in the world, where would you choose?

I’d love to tour the U.S with my music, probably some dark/goth pubs. I don’t think my music is for filling big arenas since it is a bit introspective.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

That’s probably the album “SKOLD” by Tim Skold
It changed my life and point of view and was a lifeline for me at the time.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I don’t call it guilty cause i can’t really listen to something i deem as “empty”
So everything i listen to has some meaning to me

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Tim Skold, Vile Valo, Marilyn Manson, Chino Moreno, John Frusciante, Adam Gontier.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I still have it, it’s SUM41 – Underclass Hero, I blasted it nonstop on an old cd player.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Just thank you for being there. This is something very special to me. I love it when people send nice messages to me and like or resonate with what I do.
I hope it brings something good to them 🙂

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Vantablack Warship

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Hailing from Montreal, Quebec: Vantablack Warship is a band that mixes thrash metal, hardcore, and punk. Their music is rhythmic, contagious, aggressive, violent, caustic… All with a serious dose of groove! The name of the group aims to pay tribute to Black Sabbath. The original suggestion was Vantablack Worship which was changed to Warship as the word worship seemed pretentious. They chose vantablack because it is a material composed of carbon nanotubes that hardly reflects light. It is considered the blackest black in existence. Their vision, was to be darker than the darkest of them all, Black Sabbath.

Vantablack Warship is: Pat Gordon: Guitar Pierre Pitre – Drums Yannick “Pil” Pilon – Vocals Thierry Hivon – Guitar Kurt Clifford – Bass

Following their 2018 sophomore album, Abrasive Pulmonic Speak, which was welcomed with rave reviews, Vantablack Warship is back with a hard-hitting, head-banging masterpiece. Last of the Hardmouthed Poets offers 10 tracks of titanic metal for fans of all genres. The album title is a homage to the blacklisted authors of yesteryear and reminds us not to take for granted freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Last of the Hardmouthed Poets refers to the end of eras, dying breeds, lost generations, and cherishing those who remain. From the full-on metal assault of the title track, We Shall Not Sleep to the 80s hardcore-inspired finale, Above it All; this album is all killer and has no filler from start to finish.

This highly anticipated return of Vantablack Warship will be released on vinyl and CD through BAM – Boîte à Musique records. With Last of the Hardmouthed Poets, fans can expect a number of lyric videos to be released over the coming months to showcase the album, designed by artists from all around the world. Shows are slated across Québec and Ontario including April 22nd in Gatineau at the Minotaure with B.A.R.F., May 6th for the 40th anniversary of the Foufounes Electriques, and June 2nd with Demonstöne in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and more to be announced shortly in Alma and St-Casimir Québec.

Last of the Hardmouthed was recorded by Patrick Knup at Madame Wood Studios where Montreal’s Sword’s last album was also recorded. It was mastered by Alberto Di Icaza who is also known for his work with such bands as Lamb of God, Clutch, and Spirit World. Last of the Hardmouthed Poets is unapologetically harsh, and uncompromising filled with incredible riffs and in-your-face vocals. It is a pulverizing mix of thrash, death, and hardcore with black metal undertones and extraordinary grooves which Vantablack is known for.

When you’ve been playing music as long as we have, we like to define things more in terms of eras rather than specific artists or bands. We take our influences anywhere from 80s thrash, to 90s Death, back to 80s hardcore, 90s grunge, a tad of 70s punk and hard rock with a touch of 2000s black metal and metalcore. We are really all over the map and like it that way.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I think we all wanted to be musicians at a very young age, but life gave us all a reality check and end up having us do music more so as a hobby than for a living. The music business is very hard to live off of and kudos to all the bands out there who have risked it all, it is not a small feat and required tons of hard work. We are happy being a weekend warrior type of band.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Buckwheat Zydeco, Goolagoon, Buenavista Social Club and Aggros

Do you sing in the shower?

Only Grandad’s Little Ditty off the Sailing the Seas of Cheese album.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Many shows are being booked across the province of Quebec our home province, we will be releasing a number of videos to help promote the album, and we will be holding a telethon with a Jerry Lewis holograph to repay all debts incurred in the making of Last of the Hardmouthed Poets.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We are currently writing new music but nothing is to be released in short order. However, be on the lookout for some pretty cool lyric videos in the coming weeks supporting the new album.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

As a band, I think we would put forward something like this as a line-up:

Bad Brains, Slayer, Mr.Bungle, The original Crown-Mags line-up, AC-DC, The Stooges, Testament, Alice in Chains, Cancer Bats with Scott Middleton, Celtic Frost, Deadhorse, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Suicidal Tendencies, Fishbone, and Bryan Adams.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Kiss – Love Gun and I still have two copies of it on vinyl!

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Do your civic duty today and buy Last of the Hardmouthed Poets! It’s great driving music and fun for the whole family.

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Inferion

Answers provided by Nick Reyes

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The band name was created in 1995 by our then bass player Juan Santiago and I (Nick Reyes). We didn’t want to go with a name that could be duplicated we wanted something completely unique. After hours of putting words together we settled on Inferion because to us it meant a place where there was fire and being teenage metalheads, fire was good.

We started making music in the mid 90s and wrote Infinite Dying Souls from 96-98. We got our start during tape trading that album.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Originally, we were from Miami. Frank Gross and I lived relatively nearby. But now each of us lives in different states. I am stationed in Georgia with the US Army, Frank Gross still lives in South Florida, Ray Mitchell lives in South Carolina and Elan O’Neal lives in North Carolina.

We got together via different side projects that intersected eventually with the band. Such as Kilt Ov Azazel and DDLM.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

That is one very long and eclectic list. But if it’s just me I would say probably 90’s era Death and Black Metal such but not limited to: At The Gates, Morbid Angel, Dissection, Burzum, Dark Throne, Wu Tang Clan, Filter, Sonic Youth, Yellowman, Anata, Immortal, Deicide, Helmet, Lara Neao, And Oceans, Angel Corpse, Astrud Gilberto, Napalm Death, Prong, Hum, Blind Melon, Onyx, Slayer, Mel Tormé, Tommy Dorsey, John Lee Hooker and the list goes on for days.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Always. I knew in Middle School when my band took the stage to perform a metal version of Nirvana’s territorial pissings and I sang it without a microphone. The horrified look on the faces of the kids in the audience made it abundantly clear that’s what I wanted to do.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Inferion – Inequity

Filter – Short Bus

Down – Nola

Humanity’s Last Breath – Valde

Burzum – Hvist Lyset Tar Oss

Do you sing in the shower?

Yes. Lots of Mel Tormé and Frank Sinatra mostly. Never any Metal.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Well, we have a South American tour planned for August and after that we’ll have to focus on online promotion because I’m being deployed in September.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yes. We have our new album entitled Inequity set to be released 19 May 2023 on Horror Pain Gore Death.

We have quite a few singles with it such as 8 Minutes Ago, Grief Demands An Answer and Empty Heaven’s.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Madison Square Garden. I don’t know why, I think that’s the “ok, you made it venue” that’s just universally recognized as the most important place to play.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Like our albums? Well if it’s our albums, I’d have to say this one (Inequity). The music on this album caught me totally by surprise and just invokes immense feelings of pride and camaraderie.

If it’s another bands album probably Short Busy by Filter.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I don’t believe there are any guilty pleasures, only pleasures. I openly enjoy ALL different kinds of music and don’t apologize for it or try to downplay me interest in it. I listen to just about everything. I like everything from  Ace of Base to Black Tongue.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

At a Barnum and Bailey circus tent it would be Jimi Hendrix, Benny Goodman, Erik Satie, Dio, Mike Oldfield, Neil Peart, Alex Webster, King Yellowman and Eric Johnson.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Totally. Slayer Divine Intervention. I bought it on Cassette at a record store that my girlfriends older sister worked at. Because in those days, minors couldn’t buy anything with a parental label on it. Regrettably, I don’t still have it.

The Metal Asylum Talks To….Jon Of Mars

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Jon of Mars came to me kind of easily, it’s my middle name and my favorite planet put together, and I already feel like an Alien so it made sense!

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We’re all from the Western Pennsylvania area of the United States! Some of us met through other musical endeavours, but I met Jordan through a friend of a friend

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Oh man, that is hard to boil down so I’ll give you my top 6 in no particular order: Fear Factory, Korn, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Strapping Young Lad, and Meshuggah! I think every single one of those bands had a massive influence on this album, I did a lot of weird transition songs with very digital sounds, and there’s a rap song on the album, with strange timings, it was very much like “I want to put a little bit of everything in here” kind of feel!

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I think we all had some plans to do music in some fashion, it was just random luck or dumb coincidence that got us where we are now with this album, and I think that it went way further than what we ever thought it would, so it definitely feels like a solid starting point for us to continue those dreams

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Currently listening to a lot of Amazonia from Gojira!

Do you sing in the shower?

I sing in the car, showers are relaxing time, reserved for good music and shower beers while I wash away the sins and filth from the day before

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Right now, the only plan is to keep writing and recording music, touring sounds awesome, but it’s not in the budget at the moment

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Not anything ready for the world, but it’s coming along.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Madison Square Garden would be kickass, but even playing the main stage at the Cleveland House of Blues would be sick

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Not really, I have quite a large collection of music and just naming top bands would be hard to do

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Guilty? Hell no! We like what we like and no one can tell us how to like it! But there are some things that I listen to that make my metalhead friends raise a questioning eyebrow, like N.W.A and A Tribe Called Quest, Ice Cube, Tupac, and a lot of Rap/Hip Hop/EDM/RnB from the 90s to the 2010s, I just love music!

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Meshuggah, Avatar, GWAR, Mastodon, Gojira, Korn, Slipknot, The Misfits, Fear Factory…. Pretty much every band or artist I’ve talked about already plus some OG lineups of bands that lost members like Pantera, SRV, and Nirvana. Just weeks and weeks of music nonstop!

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Hellbilly Deluxe 2 by Rob Zombie, I still have it and it was the most frustrating purchase of my entire life. I bought it at Walmart and it was the censored version, it made me so mad I hand-wrote them a letter about not having the uncensored version

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I love you, nothing is possible without you, eat your vegetables, and remember to always stretch before you exercise.

The Metal Asylum Talks To….AxMinister

Answers provided by Nicholas Klaus – Bass and Vocals

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, the band’s history, and a little bit about the various members?

AxMinister isn’t just a band, it’s a full-blown philosophy! It’s a way of life, my friend. After delving deep into our own existential abyss, we realized we’ve lived countless past lives. And guess what? In every single one of those lives, we managed to find each other and continue our sacred quest. We declared a Jihad against all metal enemies and those posers who peddle false metal. It all started during the epic Battle of Hastings in 1066 when we had a major “Aha!” moment about our reincarnations. However, how long this holy quest has been going on is still a mystery that even our deepest reflections couldn’t solve.

Are you all from the same area? How did you come together as a band?

Well, you see, every time we shuffle off this mortal coil, we must scour the globe to reunite. Sometimes we find each other in childhood, and other times it takes until our twilight years to cross paths once more. It’s a never-ending cycle of metal-seeking reincarnation.

Who are your favourite artists/bands, and how have they influenced your own sound?

Just like there’s one God, present in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, there’s only one force that drives us, split into three separate yet equally powerful parts: Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Manowar! Hail, hail, hail, and kill!

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band, or did you originally have other plans?

We are immortal warriors who must combat the heresy of false metal in every life. Sometimes we wield weapons, sometimes we resort to violence by proxy, and sometimes we even resort to the printing press. But in the twenty-first century, we realized that music is the most potent weapon we can wield to reach a mass audience.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

My morning routine kicks off with a healthy dose of Manowar. Their lyrics, promoting healthy masculinity, give me the strength to conquer the day. In the afternoon, Megadeth fuels me with the courage to confront the cesspool of our modern society. And when it’s time for slumber, Iron Maiden’s intricate melodies cradle me to sleep like a mother rocking its baby.

Do you sing in the shower?

I do more than just sing in the shower, my friend—I sing and masturbate! It’s an invigorating experience, really.

Do you have any plans for the band this year and into next year?

We’ll be rocking as many live shows as possible to promote our EP called “Vir Fortis.” On June 17th, we’re throwing an album release party at the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto. If you’re in the area, come on out and support us!

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We’ve just unleashed our latest EP, “Vir Fortis.” It’s a tribute to two fallen brothers, Napoleon Bonaparte and Vlad the Impaler. These great men were misunderstood and slandered by the lame street media. They fought against the system and stood up for the working man. The EP sets the record straight!

If you could play at any venue in the world, where would you choose?

We’re not picky about venues, my friend. Whether we’re performing in front of a roaring crowd of thousands or just the sound guy and the bartender, we bring the same level of intensity to our show. We’re ready to rock anywhere!

Do you have a favorite album? If so, what is it?

My all-time favorite album is Megadeth’s “Countdown to Extinction.” Every track on that masterpiece is solid gold. It’s the album that made me fall head over heels in love with metal.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

When I need to unwind, I put on a Wagner opera, stand in front of the mirror naked, tuck my penis, and apply lipstick while shedding a tear or two. I find it profoundly therapeutic.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

AxMinister would undoubtedly headline the show. Iron Maiden would kick things off, followed by Manowar, and then Megadeth. Finally, we’d all come together for an epic medley to close the show with a bang!

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it, and do you still have it?

The first tape I ever bought was The New Kids on the Block’s Christmas album. I listened to it a whopping 665 times in a row. On the 666th listen, I had an epiphany and decided to go all out—I burned down my house along with the tape and the family cat. Then I picked up my bass and started writing metal riffs. Good times!

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you’d like to send out to them?

I declare a global Jihad against anything that perverts the pure sound of metal! You’re either with us or against us. We have no time for fence-sitters. Join our ranks and let’s conquer the metal world together!

We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you for having me! I’d like to end this interview with a message to all the bass players out there: You don’t need that fifth string! Leo Fender invented the bass with four strings, and that’s the way it should be! If you’re playing a five-string bass, well, you’re a woman… unless you’re a woman, then you’re a cat! Allah Akbar! Keep the metal alive!

The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Fall Of Earth

Answers provided by Alex Rye (Vocalist)

Q. Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The name of the band was inspired by our song Fall of Earth. We wanted to capture the root of the band’s cause and main theme. Bringing awareness to global issues and making a strong community was the band’s primary goal outside of simply growing the band’s fandom. The song touches on topics of climate change, mass extinction, and human greed. These issues aren’t recent news, people need constant reminders that these issues are dire. We aren’t just guests on this planet. This is our home for many generations to come, and we can’t live on Mars yet. Otherwise, we’d name the band, Rise of Mars. On top of that, we also write about mental health, war, and personal struggles. Each member of the band has a share in the writing of our music. We all like to express ourselves, & our feelings through the words in our songs

Q.A re you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Brody (guitar), Brendan (drums), & Aaron (bass), all grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I (Alex the singer) grew up 3 hours south in Calgary. I later moved to Edmonton and met Brody. From there we became good friends and for years never thought to start a band. Even though we both played our respective instruments, it wasn’t until after high school Brody introduced me to Brendan. We almost had a full band at our disposal. We started jamming, playing covers like foo fighters, until it was time to write some originals. Obviously, we needed a bassist, and the auditions were lackluster. Pumping some iron at the gym one day we ran into Aaron through a mutual friend. Aaron plays classical guitar, a style that would cross over well enough into the bass guitar fingerpicking. We wrote songs throughout the pandemic and started going hard playing shows afterward.

Q. Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

The band usually agrees that people who enjoy Trivium, Gojira, Dream Theatre, or Between The Buried And Me would also enjoy our music. Gojira is definitely an influence on our guitarist. Pick scrapes, prog, and strange chords are Brody’s go-to. Brendan loves Mike Portnoy, from Dream Theatre. Aaron is more of a deathcore guy. Enjoying bands like White Chapel. As for myself, I’m more into slam metal. Vulvodynia and acrania are a must, However, I didn’t know how to scream until after the band was formed, so I was creating my own unique sound with hints of George Fisher, Chuck Schuldiner, and Michael Akerfeldt.

    Q. Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I can remember when I was a kid I would always put on headphones in the back of the car and whatever music I was listening to I would pretend I was playing it in front of a big audience. I always enjoyed singing and playing guitar so it’s not surprising that I  ended up being in a band. However, I didn’t think I was ever going to do it. My obsession with music drove me to destiny.

    Q. What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

The album, Nadir by Black Tongue has been on repeat in the gym for a solid 6 months! And Analepsy’s Atrocities From Beyond in the car. I really enjoy super-heavy music like Acranius and the Black Dahlia Murder. I even had an obsessive phase with an infant annihilator. If you couldn’t tell at this point, the heavier the better.

      Q. Do you sing in the shower?

As the singer in the band, I must admit I 100% sing in the shower! The steam from a hot shower instantly moistens your vocal cords and can help produce some gnarly screams too.

      Q. Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We have big plans coming up at the end of May 2023. We are going on tour for six weeks across Canada hitting BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. A little over 30 shows. Next up is another Canadian tour in the Fall. Around 3 months long this time. 2024 is for international tours, which will be our first set of tours outside of Canada. Super exciting! Europe and Japan are on the menu!

        Q. Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We just released our second full-length album a month ago (April 2023). We are currently touring, & playing those songs. We’re always ready for new material however so you can expect us to drop something soon in the near future.

        Q. If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I would have to say the whiskey agogo. It’s not a huge venue, but it’s legendary! I’m pretty sure every band wants to play there though.

          Q. Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

That’s a really hard question. I would have to say Totalitarian Dystopia by Acrania is up there in the top 3. It’s a brutal slam metal album that never hits the breaks. My other favourite would have to be Nightmares Made Flesh by Blood Bath. This album definitely helped me in the early days of screaming and it just totally rips.

          Q. Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Honestly, the standard music I listen to is so fucked up that it feels like a guilty pleasure. I do really enjoy grunge music though. As a metalhead in the prog realm, I know it doesn’t always get the best rep. It’s simple and dumb sometimes, but I love it.

            Q. If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Easy… Blood Bath, & Dying Fetus headline. Black Dahlia Murder, & cattle decapitation as direct support. Finally Alluvial as the opening act, maybe Fall of Earth too,  just to be greedy! All these bands are heavy hitters that would be so much fun to see live. The mosh pits would be insane.

            Q. Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

The first album I bought with my own money was Left Hand Path by Entombed on vinyl. That album was so unique to me. It really has that old-school feel, and the guitars have that beautiful heavy buzz tone. I still have it, & cherish that album.

              Q. As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I definitely wanna give a huge shoutout to all the Canadian fans who we’ve met on tour and anyone who’s planning on coming to a show for the May/June dates we’ve posted. I have met the most amazing people on tour and I truly play music for the simple fact that all you people make it so enjoyable. I look forward to seeing some new and old faces in the coming months of touring. To anyone who hasn’t seen us live yet Canadian or not! Keep your eyes peeled for more dates,  we’re coming for you! The Metal Asylum Talks To….Scarlet Anger

Answers provided by Vince Niclou, bass player

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Joe (vocalist) and Fred (guitar) founded the band in 2007. Before Scarlet Anger they were together in a typical 90’s, 00’s(hard) rock band but they wanted always to go back to their roots of harder stuff, especially thrash metal. That day, they wanted a name that is classy and aggressive and so they came up with Scarlet Anger.

                The whole band consists of:

                Joe Block (vocals) – Founder

Jeff Buchette (guitars) – After the departure of Guy, Jeff joined the band. He was well known in the metal scene in Luxembourg
Fred Moitor (guitars) – Founder and main songwriter/producer
Vincent Niclou (bass) – Pal from Joe and Fred. I’m there from the beginning.
Rod Solvilla (drums) – Rod is the drummer from Jeff’s Maiden tribute Band Edhunters

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We’re (nearly) all from Luxembourg, Europe. Our Country is only 2586 km2 big, so you can say that we all came together from the same area ;). Our drummer Rod is from France, but directly across the border.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I nearly like all kind of old school metal, from Power Metal to Death Metal. But of course thrash metal could be mentioned as my favourite style. As a kid, it was Steve Harris from Maiden who influenced me the most. That’s why I play the bass.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

As a kid there were different people you influenced me, from musicians to wrestlers to actors. But at the end of the day I was stuck with music and as mentioned before, there was Steve Harris from Maiden my biggest influence.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Nothing in particular. The most of time I listen to discoverer lists from Spotify. So I can spot on new bands. Hopefully other persons are doing the same with Scarlet Anger ;).

Do you sing in the shower?

                NO ;).

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

At the end of the year we’re looking up to release our new album “MARTYR”. But there is still a lot work to do… mixing, mastering, cover sheets, video, and so.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

“No Time” is already released from our new album “Martyr” You can check it out on all common streaming sites. In a few weeks, we’re going to release our 2nd single “Hunger”. If you follow us on Spotify and co. you won’t miss it.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

We’re still an underground band and we probably always will be, so we should be realistic. But what I always wanted is to play at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. I’m every year there as a fan and it would be great to play at one of the biggest metal festivals with the best line-up in the world.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Favourites change during the time and the mood you’re in. Sometimes it is a death/thrash album, some hours later may be I prefer to listen to Power Metal. But the album who had the biggest influence on me as a kid was “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son” from Maiden. I still like to go back to that time.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

No, not really, There is no music I have to conceal.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

                Very difficult :o.

May be, Metallica in their 80’s, Maiden with DiAnno and Maiden nowadays, Judas Priest, Slayer and we have to resurrect Dio and Lemmy. But one question lasts, who would be headlining such a line-up?

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

1st album was an album from Genesis, but more important was the 2nd. That was Number Of The Beast from Maiden. I still own all of my albums, properly ranged from A-Z.
