Metal Planet Media Talks To….Luc Bourgeois, singer/ guitar player for Sandveiss.

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members:

The band’s name is inspired by Ellen Sandweiss, the actress who portrayed Cheryl in the original Evil Dead movie. We happened to have a poster of the film in our jam space, and while searching for a band name, one of the guys suggested it. We slightly modified it, and it became Sandveiss. The band started out in 2011, and since then, we have released two full-length albums, a 7″ single, and an EP tribute to Black Sabbath. The lineup now consists of Shawn Rice (guitar), Maxime Moisan (bass), Dominic Gaumond (drums), and myself, Luc Bourgeois (vocals, guitar).

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We all come from different places but now live in the Québec City area. The band started out with a different lineup, with me being the only founding member still in the band. Shawn (guitar) joined while we were recording the first album in 2013, and Maxime Moisan (bass) and Dominic (drums) joined in 2017 and 2018, respectively, following the departure of some original members. We knew Max through mutual friends and asked him to join the band, while Dominic came on board after an audition we held to find a new drummer.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I have so many favorite bands for different reasons, so it’s impossible to pick just one. From Black Sabbath’s riffs to the vocal harmonies and lyrics of Bad Religion, and from King Crimson to Jethro Tull to Kyuss, they all influence my writing in one way or another.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was a kid, the concept of being in a band always appealed to me, even before I started playing an instrument. It just seemed like the coolest thing on earth. So not long after I began playing guitar, I was already in bands, doing shows with friends, and I never looked back. I’ve been making a living from playing music for 25 years now.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Pallbearer- Mind Burns Alive

Sons of Arrakis- Vol.II

Greenleaf- The Head and the Habbit

A Swarm of the Sun- An Empire

Dozer- Drifting in the endless void

Russian Circles- Gnosis

Do you sing in the shower?

I actually write and arrange a lot of vocal melodies while I’m in the shower. It’s a great time for creativity for me, haha.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We’re releasing a new album called Standing in the Fire on October 11th, and then we’ll go on a small tour in Quebec with our good friends Sons of Arrakis for five shows. For 2025, we plan to tour as much as we can. We’d like to tour more in Europe and the U.S., so we might work on this for next year.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yeah, we have two new singles out now, “I’ll Be Rising” and “No Love Here,” and a third single is coming in September. As I mentioned before, our new album is coming out on October 11th.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Possibly at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. What a beautiful and impressive place!

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

That’s a very hard question. It’s impossible to name just one, so I’ll list six:

  • Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
  • Bad Religion – Stranger Than Fiction
  • Jethro Tull – Stand Up
  • Voivod – Nothingface
  • Rush – 2112
  • King Crimson – In The Court Of The Crimson King

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Not really. I’m pretty comfortable with all my musical tastes and stand behind them. I enjoy a lot of different genres.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Oh, that’s a hard one. If I can include bands that don’t exist anymore, I’d pick: The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Mountain, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant. That would be an awesome lineup!

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Yeah, that was Kill ‘Em All by Metallica on cassette tape. I was 8 or 9. Unfortunately, the tape was destroyed along with others in the same box when the cable guy came for an installation and accidentally drilled into a closet full of my stuff many years ago. I didn’t realize what had happened until months later.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I would simply like to thank them for listening to our music. I see it as a privilege to have people relate to what we do.

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Leo: Hello there!! BreaKdowN BKN was inspired like Destruction, Overkill, Massacre, Devastation etc….we wanted a name that would get us on this direction!

The band started officially in 98, with me and my brother, we were playing covers and started to create music…it was  a magic moment. The band went through some changes , and today it me since the start, then we have Tati, my wife, on the bass…she loves bass and had one for years but on the pandemic times she would say “I will play and join the band” and there she is with this monstrous thunder bass now, and Edu does the drums Edu recorded the first Album and fun fact is he was like 10 years without playing and for the EP he took the drums and nailed it!

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Leo: well, the band started like this, same area etc, today this line up is together because of musical taste purely.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Leo: We love the honest aggressive music, the rage of punk bands, the metal sound of the 80s and 90s, pointy guitars, walls of Marshalls,  killer riffs and inspiring melodies, too many bands to mention…lets say Kreator, Sepultura, Judas Priest, Testament, Accept, Th Exploited …to mention a few

Leo: This year we are releasing “Divide and Konquer” a new EP after years without release, and working on concerts preparation, for the next year or so we will release more music,

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Leo: in Addition to “Divide and Konquer” that was on 08SEP2024, we are just writing and getting ideas together.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Leo: I believe we all dream about playing these big festivals…as I do, but I believe something epic like The Troubadour

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Leo: If I pick one would be Painkiller, it has everything including the best guitar solo in the world, if an Alien arrives on Earth and ask what Metal is, I would play this album.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Leo: well, I have been listening to a lot of Latin music and world music lately,

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Leo: Wow that is a hard question, I would go to perhaps 91, and get Death, Sepultura, UDO and Judas Priest with their albums from these times!

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Leo: I was into Metal and Iron Maiden, but only listening to the Radio songs, I went to a local shop and bought the first two albums in vinyl, I went home and played it loud for like months.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

The Metal Asylum Talks To Vittorio Sabelli (Notturno)

– Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Notturno was born with the idea of creating music that breathes the darkness and intimacy of the night. Atmospheres and melodies are created in harmony with the most intimate part of ourselves.

– Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Notturno is a project composed by me and Kjiel with the addition of the drummer Sven in the first album, while from the second album ‘Inside’ there is the drummer Diego ‘Aeternus’ Tasciotti. Kjiel and I live close by even if we see each other very little. I chose Kjiel because in the extreme music scene she is the only one who manages to have dynamics that go from almost imperceptible whispers to a devastating scream with a unique musical expressiveness. Above all, she is a person with whom I can find an excellent balance inside the project.

– Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

The first album ‘Obsessions’ is certainly influenced by some bands I was listening to at that time (Coldworld, Nocturnal Depression) but from the second ‘Inside’, Notturno begins to have its own unique characteristics within the Black Metal panorama. The distinctive features are certainly the use of clarinets and piano, in addition to Kjiel’s voice, which makes the project recognizable at first glance.

– Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Being able to do what you love for a living, which is playing music, is already an excellent goal in itself. I honestly never thought I could do better since I was a teenager.

– What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I still think in the old way, so no playlists but only vinyl and CDs. Lately my listening are focused on the discography of Lifelover and The Cure.

– Do you sing in the shower?

Absolutely not, I’m also a terrible singer, I admit it!

– Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

The third album ‘Our’ has just been released, again for the label Hypnotic Dirge Records. The second album of the A.M.E.N. project will be released next January for the label My Kingdom Music, together with Erba del Diavolo, the singer of the mighty Ponte del Diavolo. The album will be dedicated to the King of horror: Dario Argento.

– Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

In addition to Notturno and A.M.E.N. I’m working on the second INCANTVM album titled “Maleficia”.

– If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Notturno inside Pere Lachaise in Paris.

– Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

I have more than one but there are at least four that have changed my life, and they are: Miles Davis ‘Kinf of Blue’, Led Zeppelin II, Black Sabbath ‘The Headless Cross’ and ‘Nemesis Divina’ by Satyricon.

– Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Absolutely not. I try to listen to what is in tune with my mood every day and still enjoy the pleasure of emotions that only music can give.

– If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Very difficult, but I would say Led Zeppelin with Miles Davis and Dimebag Darrell.

– Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I still have every vinyl, CD or MC from when I was 14th years old. The first MC was Black Sabbath’s The Headless Cross and the first Iron Maiden, also on MC.

– As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Always to support Underground music, still among the few in which you can find sincerity from those who create it. Of course all the projects can be listened to and possibly purchased on our Bandcamp page: https://dawnofadarkage.bandcamp.com/

– Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

On Instagram page, in addition to Bandcamp:

https://www.instagram.com/notturno_black_metal

– We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there is anything further that you would like to add?

I think we’ve said enough things. I thank you on behalf of Notturno for your interest and we hope to hear from you again in the future.

The Metal Asylum Talks To TYSTNADEN

1. Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band, and a little bit about the various members?

LDL: Tystnaden was born in 1999 from an idea by two friends, our first bass player (Marco) and Cesare (our awesome guitarist). The idea came from our passion for Scandinavian melodic death metal at that time and the desire to create something truly our own, something very personal, powerful, and captivating…although I think that’s what drives all bands to play and compose together. The name “Tystnaden,” which means “the silence” in Swedish, was chosen to reflect the profound and introspective nature of our music.  Our first self-titled demo, Tystnaden (2000), set the stage for our evolving sound. This was followed by our EP, Fragments (2003), and three full-length albums distributed worldwide: Sham of Perfection (2006), In Our Eye (2008), and Anima (2012). Each release marked a new chapter in our development, showcasing our growth and the changing dynamics within the band. Today, our music combines a strong melodic sensibility with gritty, catchy riffs, reflecting the journey we’ve taken from our early, darker tones to a more mature and expressive sound. Our latest album, The Black Swan, will be released on September 13th by Elevate Records represents a significant milestone, capturing our reflections on life’s unpredictable events. Over the years, we’ve undergone several lineup changes, but our dedication to our musical vision has remained steadfast. Currently, the lineup features Alberto Iezzi on drums, Stefano Stiz Galioto on bass, Cesare Codispoti on rhythm guitars, Giulia Juliet Coletti on lead guitars  and of course me on vocals.  Alberto and Stefano are the engine, the beating heart of the band. Together they are solid and powerful like few others. Cesare is the composing mind of the band, he creates the first drafts of songs and leads the rhythm section live. Giulia is a talent and finds her maximum expression in the most extreme riffing and soloism. I am the finalizer, I take care of texts and voices with the utmost sensitivity that belongs to me.

2. Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

CC: Yes, all of us live near Udine in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, North-East of Italy. Our formation was a natural outcome of our shared passion for music and the local music scene. We initially connected through various local music events and collaborations, which helped us find common ground and a mutual desire to create something unique together.

3. Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

LDL: Our style is super hard to pin down, now more than ever, because weve had so many influences, listened to a very diverse range of artists, and gained so much experience over time. I cant really name specific influences or bands because its all a big mix in my head now. Sometimes I really need to hear a Pink Floyd song, and other times I need to rock out to some Korn, just to name a couple. We dont really aim for a specific outcome; we just go with whatever feels right at the moment, and by the end, we realize the result is as good as the journey we took to get there. Each of us is totally different, with our own backgrounds, both musically and in life. But when were working together, it all magically blends into one.

CC: Certainly Metallica’s stylistic greatness, System of a Down’s complex rhythms and thematic depth, Rammstein’s blend of theatricality and industrial elements, Pantera’s and In Flames powerful riffs and intense vocals , Dark Tranquillity’s style and poetry…have all played a significant role in shaping our sound.

4. Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band, or did you originally have other plans?

CC: Music has always been a central part of my life. I always love writing music, it's definitely the part I like most about being a musician today. We started almost as a joke, for the love of music and as a pastime. We immediately understood that this love would not abandon us throughout our lives, and we grew up doing it seriously. Each of us has other important professions: Laura is a doctor, Stefano a biologist, I am an engineer, Alberto a purchasing quality manager and Giulia a sales manager. Despite these huge commitments, we have always found the time and desire to build something beautiful together like Tystnaden.

5. What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

CC: Currently in the car (my favorite listening spot) I'm listening to Rammstein's Zeit, Alter Bridge's Fortress, Gojira's Fortitude and Korn's Freak on a Leash. I like to take inspiration from recent albums or less for sounds, production, riffing, etc..

6. Do you sing in the shower?

LDL: Yes, singing in the shower is a great way to practice and unwind. It’s a private space where I can experiment with my voice and enjoy music without any pressure. It’s a small ritual that brings me a lot of new ideas.

7. Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year? Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

LDL: We’re looking forward to the release of “The Black Swan” on September 13th;  we’re very excited of it. We have a release party planned for August 23rd, where fans can pre-buy the album and our new merchandise. Following that, we’ll perform live at the P.M.K. venue in Innsbruck on September 21st. We’re also planning a series of live shows to promote the album and will start working on new material for next year..

9. If you could play at any venue in the world, where would you choose?

LDL: We’d love to perform at Wacken Open Air in Germany or at Hellfest in France. These venues have hosted legendary metal bands and would be a dream come true for us.

10. Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

CC: Very hard question guys! J  There are at least ten that I consider incredible and place on the same level! I could tell you that certainly the album I've listened to the most in my life is Master of Puppets by Metallica. That album was incredible and marked my youth.

11. Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

CC: Yes, too much guilty pleasures, ah ah ah! One above all, “Rhythm is a dancer “ by “Snap!” from 1992.

12. If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

LDL: For the ultimate rock show? I’d include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Ac/Dc, Deep Purple, The Who, Metallica, Nirvana, Guns N’Roses, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Nothing else to add. J

13. Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

CC: The first album I bought with my own money was Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell”. It had a huge impact on me, and I still have it in my collection. It’s a cherished part of my musical journey.

14. As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

LDL: We want to express our heartfelt thanks to our fans for their unwavering support over the years. Your enthusiasm and dedication mean everything to us. We hope you enjoy The Black Swan and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming shows. Your support keeps us going!

15. Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

The Metal Asylum Talks To Shivered, Band Members : Mohammad Maki

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Back in 2015 I was done with my previous band called “ Lorn “ due to legal issues with the band name and personal issues so I formed Shivered, I was googling stuff and names then I come up with the name “ Shivered “ it sounds kind of disturbing and unsettling and it fits with the kind of music I’m make so I picked it as the band name, as of now Shivered is basically my solo project and I do all the instruments, I’ve worked with session musicians before but right now I’m the only member.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Unfortunately I never had opportunity to have somebody else in the band to have an impact on the songwriting, I’m from Iran and that’s it.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I have large amount of favorite artists but the main and easy ones that I can pick are : Katatonia, Paradise Lost , Swallow the Sun , Warning and Type O Negative

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was a kid and got into rock and metal music when I was eleven years old I insisted my parents to get me an electric guitar and when I got it it’s been my passion and my dream to make music.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

“ Elysion – Silent Scream “ – “ My Dying Bride – A Mortal Binding “

Do you sing in the shower?

I sing like a mentally troubled teenager and growl like a bear while showering.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

I’m working on something new and different but I don’t know when will it come out, I do my best it doesn’t take another 6 years for sure

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

“ Existential Mourning “ is my upcoming full album that will come out on May 20 2024

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Wembley Stadium , London

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Very hard question but probably “ The Great Cold Distance “ by Katatonia

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I listen couple of old Avril Lavigne stuff lol I mean I’m not a fan but I used to listen to her when I was a kid so yeah that might be it.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

I have to bring back some deceased musicians from heaven for that to happen, Type O Negative’s Peter Steele on Vocals and bass – Dimebag on Guitars and Joey Jordison on drums would make a great show.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I think it was Evanescence self-titled record and I bought it digitally and nope I lost the files.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I love you guys and thanks for supporting me

The Metal Asylum Talks To………Mike Brügger, vocals of AKROASIS

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Hello Metal Asylum! The band was founded in spring 2016 by Marcel Knupp and Gerhard Baeriswyl in Kerzers (Switzerland). Christof Schafer joined in the fall.
In 2017, Hänsù Zürrer joined the band as bass player. At the beginning of 2022, I was welcomed on vocals as a new band member.
“Akroasis” In Greek, this means both hearing and what is heard and can also be interpreted as the conscious perception of music.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Yes exactly, we are from the area around Freiburg, where the famous cheese fondue comes from. And for those who still know HP. Giger (movie Alien): Here is his museum in Gruyere Castle.
We got to know each other through other bands, concerts, and pub evenings over a beer. Typical in the metal scene. 🙂

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

It is no secret that “Akroasis” was an album name from the band Obscura. Especially Marcel  loves technical death and techno thrash metal. We love bands like Amon Amarth, old Metallica, Testament, Dream Theater, Evergrey and many others. I am currently a fan of Dark Tranquillity / The Halo Effect.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Astronaut as a child. 🙂

I got into metal music when I was 14, back then I had more ambitions to make money with music. But as you know, it’s hard to make it as a band, especially in the metal scene. Now we are older, make music as a hobby and would be happy if we could play on a bigger stage or maybe do a tour.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I open Spotify and up pops (us, of course)

Akroasis (Hubris), Falkenbach (Asa), Bolt Thrower (Those Once Loyal), Dimmu Borgir (Abrahadabra) and The Halo Effect (Become Surrender).

Do you sing in the shower?

Not yet in the shower, but I need my car as a place to practise my singing. Aaaand i’ve already been out in nature and practiced there.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Like here, I write many more interviews. 🙂

The album release concert is in the past, a small band room concert is coming up and in September we will play at a festival. More concerts are planned for next year. Of course, the songwriting continues.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

No, unfortunately not, we’re not ready yet. We have just started the process of writing new music.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I can only write about myself personally.

Latin America has a very large alternative scene. For example, I got completely lost in El Chopo Mart (Mexico City). And the enthusiasm is very high.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Many. Really.

Twilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth comes to mind first. Earlier: Slayer, Reign in Blood / or Metallica, Ride the Lightning. There are so many master albums.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Right now I’m listening to Tenacious D with Belzeboss, what a sing-along song!

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Many no longer exist or are no longer active. Ok a mix.

Slayer, Pantera, Motorhead, Metallica, ACDC, Amon Amarth, Bolt Thrower und Rammstein.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Yep, Cinderella with Long Winter Gold. I still have the CD.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Hahhaaa, Normally it should say here. Enjoy every day, it could be your last. Save the world and don’t wear fur. “What is certainly also important”

Ok, so very simple. Listen to your favorite music, meet up with colleagues/family after work and drink a cool blonde Beer. Cheeeerss

The Metal Asylum Talks To……….Keith Dombrowski of Knightfall

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

KD:Certainly. Knightfall was a project that I carefully planned, with a clear message in mind. I aimed to revive the virtues of the medieval knight’s code: honor, chivalry, justice, and, perhaps most importantly, kindness and the protection of others. When deciding on a name, I wanted it to prominently feature the word “Knight” to symbolize these values. Additionally, I sought to pay homage to one of my greatest influences, Nightwish. The word “Knightfall” resonated with me for its evocative sound and its embodiment of the ideals I wished to convey. After conducting a thorough search and finding no other band legally using the name, I felt it was a fitting choice for the project.

Knightfall is more than just a band; it’s a studio project that brings together talent from around the globe. While I write the majority of the music, it’s truly a collaborative effort. My vision for Knightfall dates back to my earlier project, Evince Ethos, back in 2009. I dreamed of creating a symphonic metal project that drew from various influences, including power metal, 80’s music, and elements of musical theater, with a hint of pop for good measure. I wanted to create an album that offered something for everyone.

The project boasts an impressive lineup, with 7 vocalists and 3 guitarists. It all began with guitarist Patrick Goble and vocalist Dee Wolf joining forces on the first three singles. Then, Jessica Mercy and her husband Sergio Salvucci, Jess is my former bandmate and writing partner from Evince Ethos (now known as Anaria), joined the ranks. Vocalist Pete Rawcliffe, whom I met through social media, introduced me to Stefani Keogh, who then connected me with Marcos Peñate.

George Acker initially reached out to me for advice on his own project, but our connection led to him becoming a guitarist for Knightfall. Susy Eskarlett’s name came through a mutual friend, and I invited her to lend her vocals to a song. Lastly, through an open audition, Adrien Djouadou answered the call, completing our ensemble.  It’s been a remarkable journey bringing together such diverse talents to create music that resonates with a wide audience.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

KD:  Modern technology has given us the ability to collaborate from around the globe and for this project I enlisted amazing talent from every corner of the Earth.

Patrick and I hail from the Bowling Green, KY area, and our collaboration began through our mutual connections. Initially, I got to know Patrick by attending production classes together, seeking to improve my skills for recording demos. Impressed by my work, I invited him to join Knightfall, and he jumped at the opportunity. Together, we crafted our debut single, “Waiting For You,” a tribute to the ’80s sound that I hold dear.

Finding the perfect vocalist for our project was paramount, and after an extensive search on Fiverr, I discovered Dee Wolf, a vocal powerhouse from Italy. Her deep, soulful tone immediately caught my attention, and I knew she was the ideal fit to kickstart our project. Dee’s exceptional talent brought our music to life, and she continued to contribute her vocals to our next two songs, enriching our sound with her incredible voice.

Jessica and Sergio, based in my native New England in New Hampshire, play pivotal roles in our project. Jessica’s diverse talents as a costume designer, makeup artist, author, and model bring a unique creative perspective to our work. She not only contributed to the lyrics of tracks like “Starfall,” “Farewell,” and “Raise Your Fist,” but also assisted with vocal arrangements, particularly on “Destiny Calling.”

Sergio, on the other hand, is a true multi-talent: a gifted multi-instrumentalist, producer, sound engineer, and videographer. His contributions to our project have been immense. Sergio lent his expertise on bass and guitars for several tracks, including “Destiny Calling,” and assisted with arranging orchestration. He even wrote lyrics for “Raise Your Fist” and directed and shot both of our music videos with his team. Moreover, Sergio took charge of mixing and mastering the majority of the album, ensuring its quality and coherence.

Both Jessica and Sergio were indispensable in the creation of our music videos and the successful launch of our album. I am deeply grateful for their dedication and talent.

Pete and Stefani, both hailing from the UK, are phenomenal singers with remarkable talents.

Pete possesses a rare gift as a male sopranist, which makes his voice incredibly unique. In fact, his vocal range is so impressive that viewers mistook him for a female vocalist in a reaction video. Our collaboration began when a mutual friend shared my cover of “Invincible,” and Pete expressed his admiration for it. Upon hearing his voice, I knew immediately that I needed him to perform on the album.

Stefani, recommended to me by Pete, is equally versatile. She can effortlessly sing high, low, and even growl, showcasing her incredible vocal range. Beyond her singing abilities, Stefani is also a talented actress. Her invaluable contributions to tracks like “Warcries” included helping finalize the lyrics and delivering outstanding vocals for the verses. Their talents truly elevate the project to new heights.

George, from Connecticut, discovered Knightfall after stumbling upon our single “Waiting For You” in a group post. Impressed by our production quality, he reached out with questions, leading to a collaboration that expanded to three songs and a solo on a fourth. George’s passion and talent added depth to our project, enriching our music further.

Susy Eskarlett’s gritty vocals were exactly what I envisioned for “Raise Your Fist.” Hailing from Mexico, her vocal style stood out to me after hearing her work on the Woods Of Wonder’s album. Combining her vocals with Jessica’s added a powerful edge, elevating the song to new heights. Their combined efforts brought strength and intensity to “Raise Your Fist,” making it a standout track on the album.

Adrien Djouadou’s involvement in Knightfall came about through an open audition for “Remember My Name.” Hailing from France, Adrien showcased remarkable talent as a bass singer, standing out among many musicians. His audition prompted a rethink of the song’s direction, originally written for a tenor voice. Adrien’s outstanding performance led to adjusting the melody to suit his style, enhancing the song’s depth. His unique voice and talent have left a lasting impact, reshaping Knightfall’s sound and highlighting the power of collaboration.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

KD: My journey into metal music began with Megadeth’s “Symphony of Destruction,” a track that captivated me with its intensity and energy. Prior to that, musicals had been a significant influence in my life. However, it was Stratovarius’ “Hunting High and Low” that introduced me to the world of symphonic and power metal, ultimately leading me to discover Nightwish.

Nightwish has been the most influential band in my musical journey, particularly their album “Once.” Among its tracks, “Ghost Love Score” stands out as my favorite song, a sentiment that has remained unchanged for two decades. Tuomas Holopainen’s songwriting has been a profound source of inspiration for me, shaping my own approach to music composition.

In addition to metal, I draw inspiration from classical film composers such as Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Howard Shore, and John Williams. Their mastery of orchestration and storytelling through music has deeply influenced my musical style and composition process.

Tuomas and Hans are indeed innovative composers who have pushed the boundaries of their respective genres. Despite their formal training in music theory, they are not confined by traditional orchestration techniques. Instead, they constantly challenge conventions and strive to create something new and unique.

Similarly, in my own composing style, I aim to break away from the norm and introduce fresh elements to the genre. While I may not have formal training in music theory, I believe in the power of experimentation and exploration. I seek to push the limits, break the rules, and bring innovative ideas to my compositions, ultimately contributing to the evolution of the genre.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

KD: Since I was around 13, I’ve harbored a deep desire to pursue a career in music. Performing in musicals and writing and performing my own songs were aspirations that fueled my passion. However, life’s unpredictable twists and turns led me to take a significant step back from this dream when I decided to start a family.

During this period, I found that neglecting my musical ambitions took a toll on my mental well-being. It was my wife who recognized the impact this was having on me and encouraged me to rediscover my love for music. Her support reignited my passion and brought me back to the path I had once envisioned for myself.

A pivotal moment came a few days before my father’s passing, when I played him a song I had written for him titled “Not Ready To Let You Go.” The emotional response it evoked from him, coupled with his heartfelt encouragement, profoundly impacted me. He saw in me a gift and a calling, describing it as my destiny. His words became a guiding light for me, especially after his passing, and served as the impetus for starting the Knightfall project. Those words are the inspiration for “Destiny Calling” His belief in me reinforced my determination to pursue my dreams and honor his memory through my music

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

KD: Recently, I’ve been immersing myself again in the soundtrack of the show Paradise City, enjoying both the curated tracks and the original compositions created for it. Additionally, I have a keen interest in indie artists, and I make it a point to listen to their latest releases whenever they share new music.

I’ve been exploring the latest album from Sonata Arctica, appreciating their return to their roots.

However, today has been a somber day for me and many fans of 80’s rock, as we mourn the passing of CJ Snare from Firehouse, one of my beloved bands from that era. In tribute to him, I’ve been revisiting Firehouse’s albums, reflecting on the impact their music has had on me over the years. It’s a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of artists and the profound connections we form with their music.

Do you sing in the shower?

KD: Yes, I sing in the shower all the time. It’s actually where many of my song ideas are conceived. For example, the anthemic chorus of “Warcries,” with its “Pound, Pound, Hit the ground” rhythm, was created by stomping in the shower. The hot water helps shut off all other noise, allowing my mind to focus solely on creative ideas. I often find myself spending 30 to 40 minutes in the shower, using this time to brainstorm and develop new songs.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

KD: Yes, we have several plans in the works for the band. Firstly, we just released our debut album two weeks ago, so our main focus right now is promoting that and reaching as many listeners as possible. Additionally, we have two other singles in the early stages of development, one original and one cover, which we plan to release sometime this year.

On another front, I’m currently working on composing orchestral music for a video game called Aspect Heroes. It’s a fantasy RPG with an old-school feel reminiscent of the original Diablo. I’m excited to release this music later in the year.

However, there will be a temporary slowdown in our activities due to an upcoming surgery I’ll be having on my neck next week, which will require some downtime for recovery. Once I’ve recuperated, I hope to dive back into working on Knightfall’s next album and continue exploring new musical avenues.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yes,  We just released our debut album “Destiny Calling” with 11 Tracks on it.  We also have other singles in the works as well for later this year.

If you could play at any venue in the world, where would you choose?

Wacken for a festival.  For an arena Hartwall Arena which I believe they renamed to Helsinki Halli.  Hopefully it reopens soon.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Nightwish – “Once ” has been my favorite album since I first heard it in 2004.  Prior to that I kept going back and forth between Megadeth – Countdown to Extinction and Danger Danger – Screw It!

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I am completely obsessed with Electric Callboy – Tekkno Train

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

I would get Nightwish, with Tarja, Anette, and Floor performing together with Marco Hietala back as well. I would want Kamelot with both Roy and Tommy.  Avantasia, Hammerfall, Sabaton, Megadeth, H.E.A.T. with Erik and Kenny, Doro, Rob Halford, Delain with Charlotte and Timo, Within Temptation, Epica, Equilibrium, Stratovarius, Beast in Black and Battle Beast.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

It was Countdown to Extinction by Megadeth on a cassette tape.  Unfortunately it was destroyed.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

The Metal Asylum Talks To…… Gjero Krsteski guitarist of band GREH

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Gjero: GREH was a very long and gradual process. Until 2018, I had been making music as a session bassist for over 10 years. I suffered severe hearing loss in mid-2018 and therefore stopped listening to music until 2021 as I constantly got earaches.

When things got better in mid-2021, I bought a guitar and started composing music. As I continued writing the music, I realized that there was one component in particular that I was missing: playing live.

Than I brought two guys with live experience into the band. Martin (vocals) and Monne (drums) bring influences from different genres, which gives the whole thing its own sound.

The band name GREH comes from my Macedonian origins, where I lived as a teenager. It is pronounced “grEHH”. It comes from the local Slavic people in their religious context and means “death sin”. This means that GREH is a violation of God’s law! It’s about reverence for self-determination. From belief to reality. From belief to disregard.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Gjero: We all live in the same region of the Black Forest, more precisely in Karlsruhe. We met through online ads and private contacts and got along very well. It has now become a friendship that I am very proud of.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Gjero: I’m inspired by a lot of bands, it’s not easy to list them. Here is a small list to give you an idea: Hexis, Heriot, AHAB, Nails, Mantar, Abest, Thou, Ophis, Konvent, Conan, Predatory Void. They are all very adorable and you can learn a lot from them.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Gjero: I’ve been playing in bands since I was 18. Now I’m 44 and I think I’ll keep doing this until it’s possible or it feels healthy and fun.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Gjero: Sweven – The Eternal resonance, Abstracter – Abomination, as well as a large amount of wave and drone songs.

Do you sing in the shower?

Gjero: Yes, I sing in the shower. It’s a great time to try new tunes. Sometimes some of my best song ideas even come from there!

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Gjero: We are working on our first joint album “Dysphoric Devotion” which will be released in winter 2024. Until then we will release some singles and play dozens of shows. We are working on playing festivals in 2025. Stay tuned, there’s a lot coming your way!

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Gjero: Ohhhhh yes! On April 1st, 2024 we will release our second single “Illusional Cenotaph”. The track is wrapped in melancholic and very intense dark soundscapes that offers an ingenious mixture of atmospheric black and death metal with doom elements, that is drilling deep into the wound of the bloody senselessness of war.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Gjero: This is actually a very good question. I think we would mainly play at festivals like: Dong Open Air, Hell Fest, Rage Aginst Racism Fest, Dark Easter Metal Meeting or Hell Over Hamburg…

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Gjero: My favorite album is “The Mysterious Ways of Repetitive Art” by the band “Chapel of Disease”

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Gjero: All Europop songs from the 90s are always a joyful and embarrassing pleasure for me.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Gjero: This question is actually very difficult because there are many good bands in the world. I will list a few more here: Throne, Mantar, Nightmarer, Convent, Conan, Predatory Void, Amenra, Hexis…

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Gjero: My first album was a mini album because I didn’t have enough money with me at the time. It was “Yesterdays” by the band “Guns ‘n Roses”. Unfortunately, I no longer have the maxi CD. I enjoyed listening to it a lot and for a long time.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Gjero: Support concerts, because only together can we continue to build the underground scene!

The Metal Asylum Talks To Bagfed

Seb is Sebastien Dubail (Guitars / Vocals)

Raige is Regis Humbert (Drums)

Rod is Rodolphe Hartig (Bass)

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Seb: The band name is coming from the C scale : C D E F G A B C, remove the C and read backwards 🙂

Raige and I started the band in 2002 with another bass player and keyboard player. After a few trial and errors we finally found the right bass player for us in 2010 when Rod joined the band. After winning a few studio days at a band contest we recorded a first EP “Throw it Away”, that was released in 2013. In the following years we had to change keyboardists a few times, but we managed to release a single in 2017 (“Looking Up”) with a music video, both self produced.

Besides playing gigs in bars and local festivals, we also started recording a few tracks for our new album in 2018 and then again in 2020, in Seb’s studio which has now become “Groove Sensitive Productions”. During 2021 it was very difficult to progress, with our keyboardist working in the healthcare system during the sanitary crisis… to the point that we decided to finish the record by ourselves. That was done by the end of 2022, and 2023 is finally here with releasing new music out to the world and playing it live, at last !

About the members :

Rod is also a bass teacher, and very talented drawer. He has released several picture books together with a female author, and is our dedicacted artwork designer.

Raige is not only a very good drummer, at ease with odd time signatures and polyrythmics, but also a very good keyboard player (he started with electric organ lessons as a kid), and self taught guitar and bass player. He’s also a very talented photographer and videographer, thus our dedicated video director (alongside of his current carrer as head of HR and Communications for a hotel and catering group).

I play mainly guitars but also bass, and a little bit of drums and keyboards. I’m a self taught singer fighting with bad habits, trying to balance with interpretation and authentic message in my lyrics. My additionnal contribution is audio engineering, since I’m an indie sound guy now (currently building a new home studio), after leaving my job in the embedded systems field in 2021.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Seb: Raige and myself were living in the same village since we were little kids, we were almost neighbors for about a year and messed around a lot with other friends on the same street. Then my family moved a bit further and we played with different friends, started to make music with diferent bands. When I was 18 we were also playing basket-ball in the same team, and it was during a summer basket camp that we realized we were both TOTO fans, and that we had to do some music together !

That’s when we started working on some of his instrumental music he was recording on a 4-track cassette recorder, and composed a few experimental tracks just for fun.

After a few months he asked me to join his pop-rock band at the time “the Lazy-Bones”, which I accepted, as lead guitarist and background vocalist. We played a few gigs here and there, recorded a 5-track EP, just before the lead singer decided to go his own way. I then took lead vocals, we hired my brother to join on keyboards, and started Bagfed as a 4 piece (with the former bass player of “Lazy Bones”.)

We’ve worn out several bass players in the first years, it was not easy in our area to find the right guy, with the right influences, good timing, and a solid groove. At some point we even decided to play with backing tracks – bass parts that Seb recorded were played through a bass amp from a MiniDisc, Raige with the headphones and click track.. but at least we could play live ! I called that playing with Scooby-Do 🙂

That was in 2010, we were playing with this setup for a band contest qualification phase in a small pub in Belfort (east of France, in our area). This day Rod was part of the jury. One of the judges introduced us to him, knowing we had a lot of common influences, he couldn’t be more right ! Rod was immediately fond of our music and style, we met a few weeks later for a first rehearsal together, which went great ! Since this day, we can delight ourselves of sweet Rod’s groove and his killer “climbing to the second chorus” bass lines (his signature).

For the record – we actually won the band contest that year, with Scooby-Doo ! The prize was 3 days in a studio, which gave birth to our first EP “Throw it Away”.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Rod : Toto, Peter Gabriel, Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, Motown artists & bass players, Dream Theater, Riverside, Steven Wilson and many others…

Raige : Michel PETRUCCIANI for his creativity, groove and dynamics, Jacob COLLIER for his no limit, extreme creativity

Seb : Toto, Steve Lukather, Joseph Williams, Santana, Satriani, Muse, Steven Wilson, Seal, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Robben Ford, Herbie Hancock, Dirty Loops, Steve Vai, Derek Sherinian, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Whitney Houston, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Charlie Puth, Cory Wong, Calogero, Florent Pagny, Coolio… and so many others 🙂

I’m really inspired by a lot of great singers / songwriters for their beautiful songs, and by a lot of great musicians for their sensitivity and creativity with their instruments. I think it gave me a sense of trying to be melodic in the first place on guitar, before building up to more complex and shred parts. Always a battle but still learning 🙂

As a band, I think our music and our sound reflect the fact that we have very wide influences in all kind of genres, and we kind of merge them into our own version of “progressive rock”, flirting with pop, jazz or funk depending on the vibe of the song.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Rod : At the beginning (“a long time ago”), I was more interested in fine arts, but as a teen, learning to play classical and electric guitar led me to a passion for bass guitar that never left me.

Raige : Always wanted to be musician but you know… life 🙂

Seb : Always been playing as a passionate semi pro, as a side hustle, until I decided to quit my day job in 2021 and fund my recording studio company.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Rod : Seal, Riverside, Mammoth WVH, Daughtry, Cody Fry, Cory Wong, Kyle Easwood, Shaka Ponk and many others…

Raige : Currently : Time (Louis Cole), Nippe’s call (Cut the alligator), Piano Ballads Live (Jacob Collier)

Seb: these days, Denizen Tenant (Joseph Williams), Minute by Minute (the Doobie Brothers)… it changes a lot every few days 🙂

Do you sing in the shower?

Rod : that would be  inconceivable …  poor neighbours 🙂

Raige : Nope, do not sing at all..

Seb : not very often, but sometimes… Elvis and Sinatra standards 🙂

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Rod : Yes, go back on stage to bring this record to life, and share these moments with my fellow musicians 😉

Seb : Indeed , currently we are focusing a bit more on the promotion of the album, with this first single and a few others that will be released in the coming months, along with music videos and a whole lot of new content on Youtube (stories about the songs, making of, alternative versions,…).

In addition we are also booking our first shows for early 2024, with a highlight mid-april where we’ll be officially presenting the album in a very cool venue in partnership with a local assocation in our area. They will be supporting us with their technical team to create a custom light show and big sound with a full day of rehearsal before the gig, which is not the usual deal for an indie band like us 🙂

We’re really looking forward to this show, and to booking some other cool gigs for the rest of next year !

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Seb : Yes, « Brand New Souls » is actually a full 8-track LP, available in CD and Vinyle directly on our website store and bandcamp.

We’ll be releasing a few singles on streaming plaforms every 6-8 weeks, as our take on trying to grow our fanbase and reach a new audience, until we think it’s the right moment to release the full album on the platforms. But in the meantime, people who already know us can listen to the full album on our website (and bandcamp).

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Rod : No preference, but rather big towns like Paris, London,…

Raige : Hollywood Bowl

Seb : The Sphere (Las Vegas)

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Raige : Sylva (Snarky Puppy)

Seb : Very difficult to pick one between Mindfields, Tambu, XIV (TOTO), Aja (Steely Dan), Dangerous, History (Michael Jackson)… maybe the one that comes back the most often could be Tribute to Jeff (David Garfields & Friends)

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Seb : seems I’m the only one here with the courage to answer this, so I’ll go all in : Katy Perry ! (Teenage Dream album, especially « California Gurls » for its groovy slap bass line which is so rare on mainstream…)
However, she lost me when I got the real meaning behind « Dark Horse » (especially the rap part – ew!)

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Rod : Bagfed with a philarmonic orchestra (utopian idea ?…. not in my mind)

Seb : Toto, Steely Dan, Dirty Loops, Jacob Collier, Seal, Muse… all jamming together at the end 🙂

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Rod : Kiss – Dynasty (giving a clue about my age here…)

Seb : It was in high school, a bulk purchase of 6 albums, including TOTO Legend (Best of) and Joe Satriani’s Crystal Planet. I think I listened to that Satch album a million times while on the school bus… Still have them, yes !

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Seb : We deeply appreciate your love and support, it means the world to us !

We hope to see you at live shows very soon 🙂
