Metal Planet Media Talks To….Luc Bourgeois, singer/ guitar player for Sandveiss.

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members:

The band’s name is inspired by Ellen Sandweiss, the actress who portrayed Cheryl in the original Evil Dead movie. We happened to have a poster of the film in our jam space, and while searching for a band name, one of the guys suggested it. We slightly modified it, and it became Sandveiss. The band started out in 2011, and since then, we have released two full-length albums, a 7″ single, and an EP tribute to Black Sabbath. The lineup now consists of Shawn Rice (guitar), Maxime Moisan (bass), Dominic Gaumond (drums), and myself, Luc Bourgeois (vocals, guitar).

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We all come from different places but now live in the Québec City area. The band started out with a different lineup, with me being the only founding member still in the band. Shawn (guitar) joined while we were recording the first album in 2013, and Maxime Moisan (bass) and Dominic (drums) joined in 2017 and 2018, respectively, following the departure of some original members. We knew Max through mutual friends and asked him to join the band, while Dominic came on board after an audition we held to find a new drummer.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I have so many favorite bands for different reasons, so it’s impossible to pick just one. From Black Sabbath’s riffs to the vocal harmonies and lyrics of Bad Religion, and from King Crimson to Jethro Tull to Kyuss, they all influence my writing in one way or another.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was a kid, the concept of being in a band always appealed to me, even before I started playing an instrument. It just seemed like the coolest thing on earth. So not long after I began playing guitar, I was already in bands, doing shows with friends, and I never looked back. I’ve been making a living from playing music for 25 years now.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Pallbearer- Mind Burns Alive

Sons of Arrakis- Vol.II

Greenleaf- The Head and the Habbit

A Swarm of the Sun- An Empire

Dozer- Drifting in the endless void

Russian Circles- Gnosis

Do you sing in the shower?

I actually write and arrange a lot of vocal melodies while I’m in the shower. It’s a great time for creativity for me, haha.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We’re releasing a new album called Standing in the Fire on October 11th, and then we’ll go on a small tour in Quebec with our good friends Sons of Arrakis for five shows. For 2025, we plan to tour as much as we can. We’d like to tour more in Europe and the U.S., so we might work on this for next year.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yeah, we have two new singles out now, “I’ll Be Rising” and “No Love Here,” and a third single is coming in September. As I mentioned before, our new album is coming out on October 11th.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Possibly at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. What a beautiful and impressive place!

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

That’s a very hard question. It’s impossible to name just one, so I’ll list six:

  • Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
  • Bad Religion – Stranger Than Fiction
  • Jethro Tull – Stand Up
  • Voivod – Nothingface
  • Rush – 2112
  • King Crimson – In The Court Of The Crimson King

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Not really. I’m pretty comfortable with all my musical tastes and stand behind them. I enjoy a lot of different genres.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Oh, that’s a hard one. If I can include bands that don’t exist anymore, I’d pick: The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Mountain, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant. That would be an awesome lineup!

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Yeah, that was Kill ‘Em All by Metallica on cassette tape. I was 8 or 9. Unfortunately, the tape was destroyed along with others in the same box when the cable guy came for an installation and accidentally drilled into a closet full of my stuff many years ago. I didn’t realize what had happened until months later.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I would simply like to thank them for listening to our music. I see it as a privilege to have people relate to what we do.

Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

Doom Force KATLA Releases Second Single “Dead Lover” + Official Music Video Released

Doom hellhounds KATLA travel into the depths of heartache and resilience with their newly released track, “Dead Lover”. The song is the second single to premiere from the three-headed Danish metal monster’s unmissable debut album, Scandinavian Pain, out March 21, 2025 via Napalm Records.

After years of honing their colossal sound and live energy, the band delivers an unrelenting blend of raw emotion, gritty riffs, and subterranean sonic battery. Scandinavian Pain not only marks a new chapter for the band, but also reflects their rise to acclaim – from humble beginnings at Copenhell Festival, to becoming a standout act in Denmark’s heavy music underground.

“Dead Lover” delivers relentless energy and powerful imagery, encouraging listeners to embrace their struggles and emerge stronger. Battling inner demons and cosmic horrors, the track pulses with raw emotion.

KATLA on “Dead Lover”:
“This song was the first song to actually go on the album, as our first single ‘Taurus’ was kind of a standalone single by then. ‘Dead Lover’ was basically made in one day, as it was the perfect fit to that no-bullshit approach we wanted to make with the album. The lyrics were almost made as the song was being created in the rehearsal room, and pretty much hit the spot straight away. On a personal level, the ‘Dead Lover’ lyrics wrote themselves at the time, since Rasmus was also dealing with some very depressive and dark thoughts at the time. It is meant as more of an ‘uplifting’ song, as it also explores the subjects of getting through rough patches and coming out on the other side.”
Watch the official music video for “Dead Lover”:

Scandinavian Pain is a cathartic exploration of personal struggles, mental health, and societal critique. Songs like “Grim Jesus” dive deep into themes of overcoming inner darkness and rejecting oppressive systems, showcasing lyrics that resonate with the resilience of the human spirit. “Castle of Purity” is a searing anthem that calls out the abuse and hypocrisy in organized religion – a powerful statement about pushing back against injustice and finding strength in individuality. Produced by Lasse Ballade (known for his work with Solbrud, Alkymist, and Halshug), the record combines visceral sonic landscapes with a deeply personal narrative. Prepare to experience the raw power and unfiltered honesty of KATLA on Scandinavian Pain.

Scandinavian Pain also marks the debut of new KATLA bassist and vocalist Theis Thorgersen. His addition not only breathes renewed energy into the band itself, but imbues an evolved sound that is heavier, darker, and sharper than ever before. KATLA’s meaningful yet uninhibited sound and high-energy live performances have positioned them as a force to be reckoned with.

KATLA says about the album:
Scandinavian Pain is an album about the shame of feeling depressed in a country that in many ways seems to be out of any misery or control of others. The inherent feeling of guilt, the despondent thoughts. The weight of cultural Christianity and being part of a system that is destroying both ours and other lives. It’s about watching the newest season of whatever decadent TV show is on while children are being murdered daily. All the songs are different, yet similar. This time, there’s an affirmation for you, who might need it, a story telling, a short grindy track, something with a blast beat, but of course also heavy sludgy doom. Welcome to the house of pain.”

Atmospheric Black Metal Four-Piece GRIMA Releases New Single “Beyond the Dark Horizon” + Official Music Video!

Just a few days until the release of GRIMA´s sixth studio album and Napalm Records debut Nightside –  out this Friday, February 28, 2025 via Napalm Records – the Siberian atmospheric black metal force reveal their third single “Beyond the Dark Horizon”GRIMA sketches a desolate, twilight-bound world where sorrow stretches endlessly beyond the skyline, and a mighty black river carves its path through the kingdom of shadows. The equally beautiful and sorrowful melody mirrors the inexorable passage of time, carrying the listener through spectral landscapes where fate is bound to darkness – a perfect melody for nightmares.

After several shows across Europe, including some with fast-rising German death metal force Kanonenfieber, GRIMA are set to honor the spirit of the Siberian Forest, Taiga, once more on Nightside. In addition to their unforgettable sound, the band’s look – towering like living trees with intimidating carved wooden masks and branched fingers – adds another haunting element to their brutal yet beautiful output.

GRIMA about the new single “Beyond the Dark Horizon”:
“The icy waters of the mighty Yenisei river, upon which our hometown of Krasnoyarsk stands, remain unfrozen even in the bitter cold of -40°C. This river carries an untamed force, flowing endlessly beyond the horizon, vanishing into the vast unknown. It is more than a current—it is a symbol of relentless motion, shrouded in the depths of darkness. Day after day, it fills an abyss without end. Its frigid waves wash over the shores, seeping into the hearts of those who dwell nearby, leaving them with a yearning for warmth that will never come. Hope drowns in its depths, and somewhere beyond the black line of the horizon, an unseen fate awaits.“
Watch the official music video for “Beyond the Dark Horizon” HERE:

Showing their variety within the black metal genre on their upcoming full-length Nightside, GRIMA also incorporate death metal-like growls into their delivery on tracks like “Impending Death Premonition” and showcase focused effort and skill on the album’s more brief, accessible offerings. “Curse of the Void” is as dreamy and complex as his big brothers, but also as satisfying as a more direct black metal anthem. With their mysterious visual aura and intriguing sound inspired by the unforgiving nature around them, GRIMA continue to prove themselves as an unmissable band to watch within the genre!

Mixing, mastering, and helming Nightside’s harsh, powerful but also clear-as-an-icicle sound is black metal-experienced producer Vladimir Lehtinen. The two driving forces behind the band’s unique sound, Vilhelm and Morbius, both deliver different aspects of the band’s impactful, massive guitar riffs, leads and melodies, while Vilhelm also soars as the voice of the woods. Guest musicians Vlad (drums) and Serpentum (guitars) also join the fold both in studio and on stage.

GRIMA about the album:
GRIMA is a secretive cult devoted to an ancient, long-forgotten Siberian forest deity, lying in wait, shrouded within the endless embrace of the Taiga. Our music is a ritual of reverence to the ancient magic of the forest, an endless dance of mysterious entities and ancient spirits, a beautiful and terrifying legend cloaked in the form of Siberian Atmospheric Black Metal. Nightside is a mysterious and melodic recording, infused with the mesmerizing cold of the Siberian night wilderness—brutal, yet equally beautiful and irresistibly alluring. A mysterious nocturnal land where winds slam the shutters of cabins in abandoned villages, guiding stars only lead you deeper into the silver storm, and a dead man is knocking his claw on an ancient pine, counting down the remaining time of yet another lost.”

Throughout that tour, Shores of Null performed 35 shows across 18 countries, including Norway, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Hungary, bringing their critically acclaimed album “The Loss Of Beauty” to the stage.

The live recordings, captured in the cities of Leipzig, Munich, Aschaffenburg, Budapest, and Belfast, preserve the raw and emotive energy of their performances. Each track reflects the band’s ability to blend melancholic melodies with crushing heaviness, offering fans a visceral live experience.

“Beauty Over Europe” is both a celebration of the tour and a gift to all fans of the band. Exactly two years after that unforgettable journey, this live album offers a chance to relive the emotional intensity and true essence of Shores Of Null’s live performances.

Guitarist Gabriele Giaccari comments:

“This tour was an incredible journey, the longest in our career, and a true milestone for Shores Of Null. As the promotional tour for The Loss Of Beauty, our latest and most acclaimed album to date, it was an honor to bring these songs to life across 35 shows in 18 countries. Sharing the stage with monumental bands like Swallow The Sun and Draconian—huge inspirations for our music—was unforgettable. Despite the melancholy of their sound, they’re some of the most fun and genuine people we’ve met, and by the end of this epic journey, we were proud to call them friends.

We owe special thanks to our incredible crew—Petri, Matti, Mikko, and Tero—who ensured everything ran seamlessly and made this experience unforgettable. To pay homage to this extraordinary chapter, we decided to produce a live album. Recorded during key moments of the tour, it captures the essence of these unforgettable performances and is dedicated to all the people who supported us live and shared these magical moments with us.”

Shores of Null stand out from their contemporaries with their ability to blend seemingly disparate elements into their sound, overwhelmingly heavy and soothing at the same time: blackened aggression stands alongside gothic-doom sections without either sounding out of place. Their music can be both melancholic yet majestic, made of chorale-like guitar textures across the instrument’s entire range, sustained by a powerful rhythmic section and punctuated by a refined mixture of clean and growled vocals, along with extensive use of pleasing vocal harmonies which have become the band’s trademark through the years.

The Rome-based metal band has been an unwavering presence within the metal underground since their musical outset in 2013, churning out a series of impressive records: the melodic and somber “Quiescence” (Candlelight, 2014), the darker and more complex “Black Drapes For Tomorrow” (Candlelight/Spinefarm, 2017), and the ambitious “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)” (Spikerot Records, 2020), a 38-minute long doom manifesto that sees guest appearances of the doom-titans Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow The Sun) and Thomas A.G. Jensen (Saturnus), along with the angelic voice of Elisabetta Marchetti (Inno).

Shores Of Null’s fourth album, “The Loss Of Beauty”, released in March 2023, was hailed as one of the best albums of the year within the genre. The band supported the release with an extensive EU/UK tour alongside Swallow The Sun, Draconian, and Avatarium, followed by standout performances at major festivals like Hellfest, Rock Imperium, and 70000 Tons Of Metal among others, further solidifying their status as one of the rising forces in the metal scene.

Melodic Death Metal Project Ophidian Memory Unveils “Hunger of Your Deceased Deity” (Lyric Video

Unleashes “Hunger of Your Deceased Deity”: A Sinister Journey Through Desolation
Prepare to embark on a sonic journey into darkness and chaos as Ophidian Memory, the rising force in Melodic Death Metal, unleashes the lyric video for “Hunger of Your Deceased Deity.” The track, taken from their forthcoming album Carrion Lord, offers a harrowing tale of desperation, destruction, and a dark pact forged in the shadows. Carrion Lord will be released on 21 March 2025 via Wormholedeath Records.
 Watch the Lyric Video Here:

“Hunger of Your Deceased Deity” plunges listeners into a visceral and haunting narrative. A thousand wanderers trudge through a desolate valley under ominous skies, skeletal remains to mark their path. Starving and desperate, they fall prey to Yzanthu, “The Crow”, a rotting avian monstrosity feasting for the first time in centuries. Soldiers and clerics are powerless against its might, as chaos erupts with The Soulless joining the carnage. Amid the slaughter, the herd fractures—some fleeing under Mattendas’ lead, while others are driven north to Hedon, where The Stag awaits to claim their souls as part of Yzanthu’s dark design.

Yzanthu had long watched from afar, targeting a gem within the human settlement. Identifying Ghale, a skilled Luminary Ritualist, as the ideal pawn to control Lurkers and humans, it corners her with an ultimatum: surrender and lead its legion to Grocinia, or face annihilation. Ghale accepts, sparing the survivors and ending The Crow’s feast.

The track’s grim tale expands the rich fantasy lore Ophidian Memory has meticulously crafted, setting the stage for Carrion Lord’s broader themes of power, corruption, and survival in a brutal world.

Carrion Lord: A Monument of Growth and Darkness

Ophidian Memory’s upcoming album, Carrion Lord, represents a bold leap forward. It blends their signature melodic aggression with deep narrative immersion. Introducing new realms, characters, and factions, the album bridges the worlds of epic fantasy and melodic brutality. Fans of story-driven metal and dark, atmospheric soundscapes will find themselves captivated by this next chapter of the band’s saga.

Canadian/Swedish Progressive Metallers, VOIDCHASER, Releasing ‘Trust’ EP March 7

Montreal/Stockholm Progressive Metal Quartet, Voidchaser, are set to release new EP, Trust, on March 7! Serving as an epilogue to critically acclaimed 2024 release Solace, the new EP completes the narrative and brings closure to the conceptual journey begun with their debut album.

Voidchaser has released two singles from the forthcoming EP: “Trust,” featuring Jim Grey of Australian prog metallers Caligula’s Horse (InsideOut Music), and “Dogma,” featuring rising prog-metal stars, The Anchoret (Willowtip). Check out the videos for each single below!

“Trust” (Lyric Video): youtu.be/4icqnLEXlvA

“Dogma” (Visualizer): youtu.be/D8ZuxXDf3uA

Trust solidifies Voidchaser’s reputation for heavy yet emotionally resonant progressive metal. The band is also gearing up for an international tour in 2025, with more details to be announced soon.

Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Chad Bernatchez discusses Trust:

Trust picks up directly after the events of Solace. Our protagonist is drifting across the vast emptiness of space, as the reserve oxygen tanks from the suit keep him alive and scenes from his life pass them by. The first song, Time, depicts our protagonist having to say goodbye to someone who he was very close to. The second song, Dogma, depicts our protagonist having to make an impossible decision, resulting in leaving behind someone else he was very close to. Finally, the title track depicts our protagonist unapologetically committing his entire life to someone only to have his trust broken and their sense of self be lost in the process.

We collaborated with musicians from all around the world on this EP and it’s very cool to have had the opportunity to do that. We have a lot of love for the musicians that accepted to be on it and feel incredibly honored that we made something they wanted to be a part of.

This EP is very special to us because it marks the end of a chapter for Voidchaser. We are very proud of how far we have come since the band has started, and there is nothing we would have done differently. Everything has led to where we are today and we have learned a lot from the past two years and we are very grateful for everything that happened and everyone who was with us along the way.”

FFO: Devin Townsend, Haken, Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Caligula’s Horse.

Rising stars of international progressive metal.”

2. Dogma (Feat. The Anchoret)

3. Trust (feat. Jim Grey)

From Montreal and Stockholm, Voidchaser is a progressive metal band. Since their inception in 2023, the band has quickly gained momentum with standout high-caliber singles that have resonated across multiple countries in North America, South America, and Europe, earning widespread acclaim from influential critics such as The Progspace, Prog-Sphere, Metal Universe, and Metal Minded, among others.

In 2024, Voidchaser unveiled their most ambitious and emotionally charged project yet: Solace, a progressive metal concept album that weaves together technical brilliance, evocative storytelling, and raw human emotion. Composed as a single conceptual piece divided into six interconnected parts, Solace showcases the band’s diverse musical spectrum, from the thunderous intensity of “Solace Part II: Only Human”—a fierce anthem of resilience featuring Ashbreather—to the haunting beauty of “Solace Part IV: Alien,” an acoustic ballad exploring themes of love and control. Solace is not just music—it is a theatrical exploration of survival, a celebration of human connection, and a reflection on the duality of strength and vulnerability.

This debut album amassed over 200,000 streams in its first three months and was charted among the top metal albums of the year according to Apple and iTunes in Canada, Sweden and other countries. This impact propelled Voidchaser onto both the local and global scenes, as evidenced by their participation in prestigious events like ProgPower Europe 2025 alongside acts such as The Dear Hunter, Threshold, Kingcrow, Extol, KYROS, and Nospūn, as well as upcoming festivals in Canada.
