As we await the long-anticipated CD release of Near Death Experience’s critically acclaimed debut album, Brief Is The Light, on May 30th, 2025, the French gothic doom metal ensemble reignites the shadows with a haunting re-release of their lyric video for “A Voice in the Dark.” This mesmerizing music video is a journey through life, death, and the yearning to return.

“A Voice in the Dark” is a melancholic yet powerful exploration of the fragile line between existence and oblivion. Originally a solo instrumental project by Mathieu Bonfardin (drums) during the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, Near Death Experience (NDE) was fully formed as a band in Nantes, France, in May 2022. NDE blends gothic, melancholic doom metal with clean, lyrical female vocals. Influenced by bands like Paradise Lost, The Gathering, Draconian, Katatonia, Black Sabbath, Moonspell, and Metallica, NDE explores the dark and compelling theme of near-death experiences.

Their LP, Brief Is The Light, is a concept album telling the story of a woman, a victim of domestic violence, now in a coma and experiencing near-death visions. As she recalls her past life, she yearns to return to reality, despite the suffering and uncertainty.

Dutch grinding hardcore/thrashcore matadors Ancestral Sin drops the music video for “Next of Sin,” the title track from their new EP. Available now on 10” vinyl as of 16 April via the band as well as Oblivion Records, the EP Next of Sin initially arrived on CD and across all major digital platforms.

“‘Next of Sin’ features topics on social imbalance and dire outcome of war,” states Ancestral Sin of the EP’s theme.

Ancestral Sin started grinding the trucks in 1989, and by 1996, they had released several albums, demos, splits, and compilations. After a long hiatus, they brought in drummer Ragnar (My Minds Mine, Inhume) in 2018, and later dropped a few new singles to fuel their comeback. In 2022, the Leeuwarden-based trio dropped the 16-track record Social Hate Speech, leaving no necks unbroken while delivering a feast for every hardcore enthusiast.

The follow-up, Next of Sin, a four-track EP, effortlessly grinds from punk to hardcore and back, thrashing everything in its path. The short-length songs’ aggression spills over into a speedy tempo, causing abrasive and hypercharged havoc. “People who haven’t heard us should expect a speedy kick in the face until the very last second,” warns the band.

The title refers to the endless failure of mankind to improve itself as a race, both socially and economically, and naturally, the songs touch on topics from social imbalance to the dire outcome of war.
